Adjoa Andoh

Adjoa Andoh is an English actress, writer, and director whose career spans theatre, film, television, and radio. Andoh began her career in theatre and gained prominence through roles in BBC soap operas EastEnders and Casualty, followed by Doctor Who. She made her Hollywood debut starring alongside Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon in Clint Eastwood's biographical sports film "Invictus."

Andoh is widely recognized for her portrayal of Lady Danbury in "Bridgerton" and its prequel "Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story." She has been nominated multiple times at the NAACP Awards for her work in these Netflix series. Her television credits also include Lady Heather Nancarrow in the thriller drama "The Red King" for ALIBI/ITV, DI Nina Rosen in BBC1's "Silent Witness," and Nenneke in the Netflix fantasy drama "The Witcher." Andoh received the Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to drama, reflecting her contributions to the performing arts.

On stage, Andoh has performed lead roles at the National Theatre, including Condoleezza Rice in "Stuff Happens" and Serafina Pekkala in "His Dark Materials." With the Royal Shakespeare Company, she played Portia in "Julius Caesar," Ulysses in "Troilus & Cressida," and Helen of Troy in "The Odyssey." She conceived, co-directed, and played the lead in "Richard II" at Shakespeare's Globe in the United Kingdom's first all women-of-color production. Andoh also directed, co-produced, and played the lead in a theatre production of Shakespeare's "Richard III" for Liverpool Playhouse and The Rose Theatre Kingston, which was later adapted into a film.

Andoh is an Associate Artist at the Royal Shakespeare Company and has served as the Cameron Mackintosh Visiting Professor of Contemporary Theatre at the University of Oxford. She is an honorary fellow of the Shakespeare Association of America, the British Shakespeare Association, and the Royal Society of Literature. Andoh has worked as a BBC radio actor for more than 30 years and is an award-winning narrator of over 150 audiobooks, including "Americanah" by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and "The Power" by Naomi Alderman.

Andoh served as a judge for the Booker Prize, underscoring her influence in literature and the arts. She is an ambassador for the International Rescue Committee and a patron for Tree Aid and the Heritage and Cultural Society of Africa. Andoh has worked with the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art as an audition panel member and director for more than 20 years, contributing to the development of emerging performers. Her career encompasses groundbreaking roles, leadership in the performing arts, and a commitment to social causes, establishing her as a multifaceted figure in British culture, theatre, and television.
