Zoe Lister-Jones Biography

Zoe Lister-Jones is an actress, writer, director, singer, and playwright whose career encompasses theater, film, and television. Lister-Jones graduated with honors from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University and studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. She began her career in theater, originating a role on Broadway in "The Little Dog Laughed" before moving into screen roles. Lister-Jones wrote and performed the one-woman, ten-character show "Co-dependence is a Four Letter Word" at New York City's Performance Space 122. Her New York City theater credits also include "Seminar" and The New Group's "The Accomplices."

Lister-Jones first gained recognition as a writer-performer in independent film. She co-starred, co-produced, and co-wrote the independent feature "Breaking Upwards," a film that explores a young New York couple who strategize their own breakup. The film, produced on a modest budget, was featured in The New York Times as an example of sweat equity in the independent film industry. She also wrote the lyrics and performed many of the tracks on the original motion picture soundtrack, with the film premiering at the SXSW Film Festival. Lister-Jones followed with "Lola Versus," her second project co-written with director Daryl Wein and distributed by Fox Searchlight Pictures. She appeared in the HBO project "Confirmation" opposite Kerry Washington.

Lister-Jones made her directorial debut with the comedy-drama "Band Aid," which was the first narrative feature film with an all-female crew, underscoring her commitment to inclusive filmmaking. The film received positive reviews from critics and was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize in the Dramatic category at the Sundance Film Festival. She expanded her directorial portfolio with "The Craft: Legacy," the sequel to "The Craft," produced by Columbia and Blumhouse, and the apocalyptic dramedy "How It Ends," which she co-wrote, co-produced, and co-directed, also starring in the film alongside Whitney Cummings, Tawny Newsome, and Finn Wolfhard.

On television, Lister-Jones co-starred as Jen Collins Short in the CBS sitcom "Life in Pieces" and is also known for her roles in "Whitney" and "New Girl." Her television work includes the comedy series "Slip," which she wrote, directed, and starred in, making her the first woman to have written, directed, and starred in every episode of a season of television. The series earned two nominations at the Independent Spirit Awards: Best New Scripted Series and Best Lead Performance in a New Scripted Series. Lister-Jones also joined the cast of "The Miniature Wife," alongside Elizabeth Banks, Matthew Macfadyen, and Sian Clifford.

In addition to her screen work, Lister-Jones is a musician. She has performed with a rock band, and her debut solo CD was titled "Skip the Kiss." Her songwriting is featured in her film projects, from penning lyrics for "Breaking Upwards" to writing all the original songs for "Band Aid." Lister-Jones has also taken on acting roles in Zach Braff's "A Good Person," Ari Aster's "Beau Is Afraid," and Alex Ross Perry's experimental docufiction musical biopic "Pavements." Her career is marked by creative control, genre versatility, and a commitment to inclusive storytelling, establishing her as a significant figure in independent film and television.
