Kurtwood Smith

Kurtwood Smith is a veteran actor known for his commanding presence, sharp delivery, and ability to bring depth to both authoritarian villains and dry-witted father figures. Born in New Lisbon, Wisconsin, Smith studied at San José State University before earning an MFA from Stanford University. He began his career in theater and television in the 1970s and steadily built a reputation as one of Hollywood’s most reliable character actors, equally adept at drama and comedy.

Smith gained widespread recognition for his chilling portrayal of Clarence Boddicker in the 1987 sci-fi classic "RoboCop," delivering a performance that remains one of the film’s most memorable elements. He further demonstrated his dramatic range in roles such as Mr. Perry in "Dead Poets Society," where he played the stern father of a prep school student, and appeared in numerous other films including "Rambo III" and "The Virgin Suicides." For many audiences, however, Smith is best known as Red Forman, the gruff yet secretly devoted father on the hit sitcom "That '70s Show." From 1998 to 2006, he became a fan favorite for his deadpan humor and iconic threats to put a “foot” somewhere it didn’t belong. He later reprised the role in the Netflix sequel series That '90s Show, introducing the character to a new generation and reaffirming his lasting appeal.
