
Earl Bennett, Ph.D., is a former professional football wide receiver and academic leader known for his contributions to college football and higher education. During his college career at Vanderbilt University, Bennett became a three-time All-SEC selection and left as the all-time SEC leader in receptions with 236. He is the first SEC receiver to record 75 receptions in three different seasons and holds the SEC record for most touchdown catches in a single game with five against Kentucky. His honors include All-SEC recognition across three seasons and an All-American selection.
The Chicago Bears selected Bennett in the third round, 70th overall, of the NFL Draft. He played six seasons with the Bears, recording 185 receptions for 2,277 yards and 12 touchdowns. Bennett was a key part of the Bears' offense, reuniting with former Vanderbilt teammate Jay Cutler in Chicago. He retired from professional football after his tenure with the Bears. Bennett has been inducted into the Southeastern Conference Legends and the Vanderbilt Hall of Fame.
After his playing career, Bennett pursued academic advancement, earning bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Vanderbilt's Peabody College and a Ph.D. in higher education leadership and policy studies from the University of Houston. He has contributed to education and community engagement through initiatives such as "The Prime Experience with Earl Bennett" and "Earl Bennett's Legends for Literacy."
Bennett has served as Vanderbilt's first executive general manager of athletics, supporting the university's 17 varsity sports programs. Prior to this role, he was football's director of player development and executive director of player development and administration, focusing on the holistic development of student-athletes, including personal development, career development, and community service.
