Dan Kildee Biography

Dan Kildee is a public servant and community advocate whose career spans nearly five decades in elected office and civic leadership. Kildee began his public service when he was elected to the Flint Board of Education at age 18, becoming one of the youngest elected officials in the country at the time. His early commitment to community engagement set the foundation for a career focused on the people of mid-Michigan.

Before entering national politics, Kildee spent 25 years in Genesee County government, including 12 years as a county commissioner—five as Board Chair—and 13 years as County Treasurer. He established himself as a leader in urban revitalization, co-founding and serving as president of the Center for Community Progress, a national nonprofit organization focused on urban land reform and revitalization. Kildee founded Michigan's first land bank, the Genesee County Land Bank, which has been responsible for over $100 million in redevelopment in Flint. This initiative became a national model, earning the Harvard Kennedy School of Government's Innovations in American Government Award and inspiring the creation of more than 250 land banks across the United States.

Kildee served as a member of the U.S. Congress, representing Michigan's 8th and previously the 5th congressional district. During his tenure, he held leadership roles as Chief Deputy Whip for House Democrats and co-chair of the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee. He served on the Ways and Means Committee and the Budget Committee, and co-chaired the bipartisan Congressional PFAS Task Force to address toxic PFAS chemicals. Kildee played a key role in securing $170 million in federal aid to replace lead pipes in Flint during the water crisis. He also worked with the Hekmati family and the Obama administration to raise awareness and negotiate the release of Amir Hekmati, an American citizen and U.S. Marine veteran held as a political prisoner in Iran.

As a member of House Democratic leadership, Kildee contributed to climate change, electric vehicle, semiconductor, and prescription drug legislation, including capping the cost of insulin at $35 for senior citizens. He helped form a congressional task force to address child labor abuses and advocated for stricter regulations on PFAS chemicals. Throughout his congressional career, Kildee secured more than $1.7 billion in federal funding for his district.

Kildee continues his commitment to the Flint community as president and CEO of the Community Foundation of Greater Flint. He also holds the Griffin Chair of American Government at Central Michigan University. Kildee earned a Bachelor of Science in Community Development from Central Michigan University and was named a Fannie Mae Foundation Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. His career is characterized by hands-on governance, bipartisan coalition-building, and advocacy for working families, with expertise in urban policy, environmental regulation, and economic development.
