Kymberlee O'Brien, MEd, PhD Biography
Dr. Kymberlee O'Brien, M.Ed., Ph.D., is a psychophysiologist and neuroscience researcher who studies the biology of stress reactivity under pressure, and who has lived it. For nearly 18 years, Dr. O'Brien has directed her own research labs studying the body's physiological response to acute competitive and social stress, including more than 300 clinical-grade hair cortisol preparations and extensive heart rate variability, HRV, and neuroendocrine work on how stress hormones shape performance under pressure. Her research reframes impostor syndrome not as a mindset problem but as a physiological one, an adaptive response rooted in the body's ancient stress-detection systems, offering audiences a fundamentally different, evidence-based way to understand self-doubt, confidence, and performance under evaluation. She brings live biometric demonstrations to the stage, including EEG and HRV, to make the science tangible for audiences.
Dr. O'Brien is also a working performer, a jazz vocalist who has stood on stage under exactly the kind of acute, high-stakes physiological load she studies in the lab, which gives her science a rare, lived credibility with audiences. She is a faculty member at a New England college where she teaches Neuroscience of Leadership, and she founded NeuraLight Consulting to bring this research to organizations navigating real-time pressure. She has delivered Grand Rounds to several notable medical facilities on the neuroscience of impostor syndrome.

Ancient Circuits, Modern Doubts: A Neurobiological Model of the Imposter Phenomenon
Most advice for imposter syndrome treats it as a thinking problem to fix through reframing. It isn't. It's physiological. Drawing on nearly 18 years directing research labs studying the body's response to acute competitive and social stress, Dr. O'Brien shows audiences what is actually happening in the nervous system when high performers feel like frauds despite real competence — and why that feeling is an adaptive output of ancient survival systems, not a character flaw. This talk integrates cutting-edge stress physiology, interoception, and brain science into a single, coherent model, and delivers a genuinely different, testable claim: regulating the body first — before trying to think differently — produces lasting change that cognitive reframing alone cannot. Audiences leave with a physiology-first understanding of self-doubt and concrete tools for working with their nervous system instead of against it.

The Neuroscience of Leadership
What separates leaders who stay clear-headed under pressure from those who unravel isn't willpower — it's physiology. Dr. O'Brien, who teaches the Neuroscience of Leadership at William James College, translates stress and performance science into a practical framework for leading well when the stakes are highest. Drawing on her own research into the body's response to acute competitive and social stress, this talk shows audiences how the nervous system shapes decision-making, communication, and presence under pressure — and how leaders can train their physiology, not just their mindset, to lead more effectively. Grounded in real research rather than motivational theory, this session gives leadership teams a genuinely evidence-based lens on performance, resilience, and what it actually takes to stay steady when everything is on the line.
