Octavia Spencer

Octavia Spencer is recognized in the film industry for her range as an actress, with performances spanning historical drama, psychological horror, and biographical films. Spencer made her film debut in the drama "A Time to Kill" and, after a decade of supporting roles in film and television, gained widespread attention for her portrayal of a maid in 1960s America in the drama "The Help." That performance earned Spencer the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress, and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress. The role was informed by Spencer's friendship with author Kathryn Stockett, who drew inspiration from Spencer for the character of Minny Jackson.

Spencer's subsequent roles as Black women in 1960s America, including Dorothy Vaughan in the biopic "Hidden Figures" and a cleaning woman in the fantasy film "The Shape of Water," led to two consecutive Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress. She became the first Black actress to achieve this distinction and remains the only one to be nominated twice after winning. Her performance in "Hidden Figures" also earned her a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

In addition to her film work, Spencer has established herself in television and production. She launched her production company, ORIT Entertainment, with projects such as "Truth Be Told," "Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker," and the documentary short "Right to Try." Spencer led the Apple TV+ drama series "Truth Be Told" and received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for her portrayal of Madam C. J. Walker in the Netflix miniseries "Self Made." She also served as an executive producer on the drama "Green Book," which won the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Spencer is the first Black actress to receive two consecutive Academy Award nominations in back-to-back years, the first to receive two nominations after a win, and is the second-most nominated Black actress to date behind Viola Davis. Her accolades include two Critics' Choice Movie Awards, three National Board of Review Awards, and the Producers Guild of America Visionary Award. Spencer has also been honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Beyond acting and producing, she is the author of the children's novels "Randi Rhodes, Ninja Detective: The Case of the Time-Capsule Bandit" and its sequel, "Randi Rhodes, Ninja Detective: The Sweetest Heist in History."

Spencer continues to take on new projects in film and television, including roles in the Prime Video action-adventure miniseries "Ride or Die" and in Chinonye Chukwu's feature adaptation of Arthur Miller's play "Death of a Salesman." In 2026, she narrated and executive-produced "Lost Women of Alaska," which aimed to restore the dignity of Indigenous women who were victims of a serial killer and bring attention to systemic issues affecting marginalized women. She is known for navigating dyslexia by learning her characters' lines through acting out the essence of the dialogue, demonstrating adaptability and commitment to her craft in the entertainment industry.
