Matthew Rhys

Matthew Rhys, a Royal Academy of Dramatic Art alumnus, first gained recognition for his extensive body of work in both British and American film and television. Equally comfortable in front of the camera and on stage, he has portrayed a range of characters, from a Cold War-era spy in "The Americans," for which he earned the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 2018, to the iconic Perry Mason in the eponymous series. His work in "The Americans" also garnered him the Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series in 2019. Rhys's versatility extended to guest roles in "Girls" and voice work in animated series like "Infinity Train," "The Owl House," and "Gremlins."

Off screen, Rhys has been equally prolific. He returned to his Welsh roots in 2025 to critically acclaimed performances as Richard Burton in the one-man play "Playing Burton." Rhys's entrepreneurial endeavors include a production company, Patagonia, established in 2011, which is currently developing a film adaptation of the book "Operation Julie." A community supporter, Rhys has invested in and led fundraising efforts for two pubs in Wales, including the Glan Yr Afon in Pennal, and rents out a charter boat named Rarebit in New York City. He was acknowledged as a fellow of Aberystwyth University in 2008 and was accepted as a member of the Gorsedd of the Bards the same year.

In addition to his acting and entrepreneurial pursuits, Rhys is also an author. His book, "Patagonia: Crossing the Plain," provides a photographic account of his journey on horseback in Patagonia. His most recent roles include appearances in films such as "Cocaine Bear" and "IF," and in TV series like "Perry Mason" and "The American Revolution." For his performance in Netflix's "The Beast in Me," he was nominated for a Golden Globe. Rhys continues to explore a diverse range of roles and projects, reflecting his commitment to his craft and his ability to engage and captivate audiences with his performances.
