Kirsten Vangsness is an actress and writer best known for her role as the brilliant and quirky FBI technical analyst Penelope Garcia on the long-running CBS crime drama "Criminal Minds." With her colorful wardrobe, rapid-fire intellect, and emotional warmth, Vangsness helped transform Garcia into one of the series’ most beloved characters, appearing from the show’s 2005 debut through its 2020 finale and reprising the role in its spinoffs.
Vangsness discovered her love of performance in community theater before studying at Cypress College and later, California State University, Fullerton. She built her early career on the Los Angeles theater scene, earning acclaim for her comedic timing and distinctive stage presence. Her breakout casting on "Criminal Minds" was initially intended as a guest role, but her chemistry with the ensemble and instant fan appeal quickly made her a series regular.
Beyond acting, Vangsness has contributed creatively behind the scenes. She co-wrote several episodes of "Criminal Minds" and has also appeared in independent films, guest-starred on television series, and remained active in theater.
