Jungsik Yim Biography
Chef Jungsik Yim has gained acclaim for his “New Korean” cuisine, which reimagines traditional Korean dishes with a modern twist. His culinary journey began during his army days when his talent was recognized by the commanding officer who made him his personal chef. The experience inspired Yim to learn to cook professionally, eventually leading him to the renowned Culinary Institute of America, where he was introduced to the intricacies of fine Western cooking. This was followed by apprenticeships at leading New York restaurants Aquavit and Bouley. In 2007, he relocated to Spain where he apprenticed at 2 star Michelin-rated Zuberoa followed by a stint at 3 star Michelin-rated Akelarre. In 2009, Chef Yim opened Jungsik in Seoul, followed by the launch of JUNGSIK New York in 2011. The New York City location received 3 Michelin stars in 2024, becoming the first Korean restaurant outside of South Korea to earn this accolade. Additionally, he opened SEA in Manhattan, also in 2024. Yim received Outstanding Chef honors at the 2025 James Beard Awards.
