Mental health has always been important, but it hasn’t always garnered the attention it  deserves. In the last two years, we’ve seen a drastic improvement in awareness.

The isolation, loss of life, and wide scale health complications brought on by the pandemic helped set the stage for a more meaningful conversation, but it’s important to acknowledge the decades of work done by mental health professionals and advocates that laid the groundwork for the progress we’re seeing now.

It’s a great time to familiarize yourself with some of the top speakers on mental health, mindfulness, resilience, and well-being. These experts have built their careers around educating the public on the importance of taking care of your mental health, and they share techniques for taking ownership of this in our daily lives.

Dr. Kristen Lee

Dr. Kristen Lee, known as “Dr. Kris,” is an internationally recognized, award-winning behavioral science clinician, researcher, educator, speaker, and comedian. As the Lead Faculty for Behavioral Science and Faculty-in-Residence at Northeastern University, Dr. Kris’s research and teaching interests include individual and organizational well-being and resilience, particularly for marginalized and underserved populations.

Dr. Kris is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker known for her advocacy in promoting increased mental health integration in social policies and institutions to facilitate access and improved health outcomes in the U.S. and across the globe.

Dr. Christian Conte

Dr. Christian Conte is one of the country’s leading authorities on Emotional Management and how it affects our personal and professional lives. He is a prolific author and a familiar face to many from his television work, most notably as the co-host of the Spike TV show “Coaching Bad,” and as a featured counselor on VH1’s “Family Therapy.” His latest book, “Walking Through Anger,” is available now.

As an educator and trainer, Dr. Conte brings his unique energy, unquenchable passion, and a tremendous sense of compassion to his efforts to teach people about why they do what they do, and how they can use that knowledge to transform their own lives as well as those around them. Rebekah Gregory

In the Spring of 2013, Rebekah Gregory’s life was forever changed by an act of terrorism that shook the entire world. A bystander at the Boston Marathon, along with her five-year old son, Gregory was 3 feet away when two bombs went off 14 seconds and 200 yards apart. The explosions claimed Gregory’s leg, but certainly not her fighting spirit.

Since then, Gregory has become a force to be reckoned with. She has inspired audiences all over the world including the Ambassador of the Holy See in Rome, Italy, the United Nations, Asics, ESPN Women’s, and has been featured in thousands of media outlets which includes blogging for People Magazine and Runners World.

Maurice Clarett

Maurice Clarett is a college football champion former pro football player, and current mental health advocate. After a series of personal setbacks, which interfered with his hopes of an extended NFL career, Clarett stood at a crossroads in his life with two paths to choose from: succumb to his challenges or overcome them. He chose the latter, compiling the lessons he learned to develop The Maurice Clarett brand, which offers an acute acumen and expertise in the worlds of athletics, education and business.

Clarett founded The Red Zone, a behavioral health agency dedicated to empowering youth and adults in need by providing comprehensive and therapeutic services in 2016 after he noticed a need for mental health awareness and access in his community.

Sean Astin

Fans of Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy will recognize Sean Astin as the loyal sidekick Samwise Gamgee — but his work expands far beyond that iconic role. Astin has graced the silver screen in the 1985 cult classic “The Goonies” as well as inspiring millions as the title character in the movie “Rudy.” Recently, Astin battled Demogorgons in Netflix’s “Stranger Things 2” as the lovable Bob Newby.

Beyond his illustrious acting career, Astin has served on the board of several non-profit organizations and is a vocal advocate on many issues including mental health awareness. After the passing of his mother in March 2016, Sean began fundraising to create a foundation to carry on her life’s work as an advocate for mental health InMemoryOfPattyDuke.com; he frequently lectures on reducing the stigma of mental health issues.

Jenn Lim

Jenn Lim is the CEO of Delivering Happiness (DH), a company she and Tony Hsieh (the late CEO of Zappos.com) cofounded to create happier company cultures for a more profitable and sustainable approach to business. In her new book “Beyond Happiness: How Authentic Leaders Prioritize Purpose and People for Growth and Impact,” Lim draws on her decades of experience in culture and strategy to translate it into a practical “how to” framework for more sustainable workplaces and modern organization design.

Lim’s mission is both simple and profound: to teach businesses how to create workplaces—led with happiness and humanity—that generate more profit, sustain all people at every level of the organization, and share how we can make an impact by being true to our authentic selves. Dr. Mindy Thompson Fullilove

Dr. Mindy Thompson Fullilove is a social psychiatrist and professor of urban policy and health at The New School. She completed her AB at Bryn Mawr College, MS and MD at Columbia University and completed her residency in psychiatry at New York Hospital-Westchester Division and Montefiore Hospital. Dr. Fullilove has published over 100 scientific papers and eight books. 

Her most recent book “Main Street: How a City’s Heart Connects Us All,” was released by New Village Press in September 2020. With her training in psychiatry and family therapy, she works to help others make sense of the painful experiences of life.”
