A new chapter in space exploration is beginning to take shape.
With NASA’s Artemis II mission preparing to send astronauts around the Moon for the first time in decades, global attention is once again turning toward the people behind these historic moments. As interest in space grows, so does curiosity about the individuals who have experienced it firsthand.
For organizations and audiences, astronauts offer something rare. They combine technical expertise with lived experience in high-stakes environments, bringing insights on leadership, teamwork, innovation, and decision-making under pressure.
The following astronaut speakers represent a range of backgrounds and missions, each with a perspective that connects with audiences well beyond the world of space exploration.
José M. Hernández
Former NASA Astronaut & Engineer; Author of “Reaching for the Stars”
José Hernández’s journey to space began far from NASA. A former migrant farmworker, he was selected as part of NASA’s 19th astronaut class in 2004 and later served as a flight engineer on the 2009 STS-128 Space Shuttle Discovery mission to the International Space Station.
During the 14-day mission, Hernández operated the shuttle’s robotic arm and became the first astronaut to tweet in both English and Spanish from space. Before joining the astronaut corps, he worked at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, where his team contributed to the investigation into the Space Shuttle Columbia accident.
Earlier in his career, Hernández spent more than 15 years at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, working on space technologies, medical imaging advancements, and nuclear nonproliferation programs.
Peggy Whitson
Director at Axiom Space; NASA’s Most Experienced Female Astronaut; Biochemistry Researcher
Dr. Peggy Whitson has logged more time in space than any other woman in history, with 675 days across her missions. A biochemist by training, she conducted research aboard the International Space Station and set multiple records, including the longest single spaceflight by a woman and serving as the first female commander of the ISS.
In 2023, Whitson commanded Axiom Mission 2, becoming the first woman to lead a private space mission. She now serves as Director of Human Spaceflight at Axiom Space, contributing to the development of a commercial space station.
Her 37-year career reflects the evolution of spaceflight, from government missions to the growth of commercial space exploration.
Leland Melvin
Engineer, Educator, Author, Former NASA Astronaut & Former NFL Wide Receiver
Leland Melvin brings a rare combination of experiences in professional sports and space exploration. Before becoming an astronaut, he played as a wide receiver in the NFL, later becoming the first person drafted into the league to fly in space.
Melvin served as a mission specialist on Space Shuttle Atlantis missions STS-122 and STS-129, contributing to the construction of the International Space Station, including delivery of the Columbus Laboratory.
He later served as NASA Associate Administrator for Education and co-chaired the White House’s STEM Education Task Force. Through media, speaking, and his book “Chasing Space,” he continues to inspire audiences around science, education, and perseverance.
Jeanette J. Epps
Retired NASA Astronaut; Aerospace Engineer & Former CIA Intelligence Officer
Jeanette J. Epps brings a multidisciplinary perspective shaped by careers in engineering, intelligence, and spaceflight. She participated in missions including SpaceX Crew-8, spending 235 days aboard the International Space Station.
Epps has taken part in specialized training programs such as NEEMO and CAVES and became the first African American woman to participate in the European Space Agency’s CAVES program.
Her work includes technical research in aerospace engineering and smart materials, along with public engagement in STEM education. She frequently speaks on innovation, exploration, and expanding access to careers in science and technology.
Michael López-Alegría
Former NASA Astronaut; ISS Commander & Commercial Spaceflight Leader
Michael López-Alegría brings more than four decades of experience in aviation and spaceflight. A former NASA astronaut and International Space Station commander, he has completed four space missions, including commanding Expedition 14.
He holds one of the longest cumulative spacewalk durations in history, with 10 extravehicular activities totaling over 67 hours. His experience spans both government and commercial missions, including commanding Axiom Mission 1 and Axiom Mission 3.
López-Alegría has also played a leadership role in the commercial spaceflight industry and continues to contribute to advisory efforts across NASA and the FAA.
Sunita Williams
Retired NASA Astronaut; Record Holder for Spacewalks and Spacewalk Time by a Woman
Sunita Williams is a record-setting astronaut known for endurance and leadership in space. Across her missions, she has logged more than 300 days in orbit and holds the record for total spacewalk time by a woman.
She served as a flight engineer on Expedition 14/15 and later commanded Expedition 33. During her first mission, she set a record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman at the time.
Most recently, Williams participated in the first crewed flight of Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft and completed an extended mission aboard the ISS before returning to Earth in 2025.
Barry “Butch” Wilmore
NASA Astronaut & Retired U.S. Navy Captain
Barry Wilmore is a veteran of three spaceflights, logging 464 days in space. He served as a pilot on Space Shuttle Atlantis during STS-129 and later commanded the International Space Station during Expedition 42.
Wilmore also participated in the first crewed Starliner mission alongside Sunita Williams, completing an extended stay aboard the ISS before returning to Earth in 2025.
His career spans service as a naval aviator, test pilot, and astronaut, with experience in both shuttle missions and long-duration spaceflight.
Cady Coleman
Former NASA Astronaut; Chemist & U.S. Air Force Officer
Cady Coleman is a veteran of two Space Shuttle missions and a six-month expedition aboard the International Space Station. A chemist by training, her work has focused on materials science, biotechnology, and fluid physics.
During her time on the ISS, Coleman served as Lead Robotics and Lead Science officer and performed the second-ever robotic capture of a supply spacecraft. She also contributed to the integration of commercial spaceflight partnerships at NASA.
Today, Coleman remains active in science and education, serving as a research affiliate at the MIT Media Lab and advising organizations focused on innovation and collaboration.
