Dominic Rhodes Biography

Rhodes was a two-year standout at Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas, where he earned All-America honors and twice was named an all-conference selection. Rhodes was then recruited by Midwestern State University as a running back and punt returner. He was a two-year stand out: even though he stayed for only two years, he broke every school record for rushing. He is ranked third all-time in NCAA Division II with 185.18 all-purpose yards per game.

He was coached in high school by none other than the likes of Coach O'Neil who is currently a coach at Seven Lakes High School. Rhodes has been quoted on how O'Neil made him who he was and without him he would have never made it to the NFL.

After two years at Midwestern State University, Rhodes decided to go the NFL. Despite his college career, he was not chosen in the 2001 NFL Draft. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Indianapolis Colts.

In a 2001 game against the Kansas City Chiefs, Rhodes returned a punt for a touchdown. In that game, the Indianapolis Colts' starting running back, Edgerrin James, injured his knee and ended his season. As a result, Rhodes was the starting running back for the rest of the Colts' 2001 season. That year, Rhodes ran for the third most rushing yards by a rookie in a single season, and the most rushing yards by an undrafted rookie in NFL history, he also was the first rookie to go undrafted and have a season with over 1,000 yards. No other player has accomplished that feat. Rhodes accomplished these marks while only starting in the final 9 games of the season following the injury to Edgerrin James.

During the 2006 NFL season, Rhodes was the starting running back for the Colts, as James left to play for the Arizona Cardinals. Through Week 11, Rhodes had 414 yards on 122 attempts and 3 touchdowns. After the whole season Rhodes had rushed for 641 yards and 5 touchdowns. On February 4, 2007, in Super Bowl XLI, he scored a one-yard touchdown and rushed for over 100 yards to help the Colts claim a 29-17 victory.

Rhodes became a free agent for the 2007 free agency period. On March 9th, he signed a two-year, $7.5 million contract with the Oakland Raiders. On July 3rd he was suspended for four games for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.
