 Rick Cleveland Biography

In 2000, he won an Emmy Award and a Writer's Guild Award for his writing on The West Wing. His play Jerry and Tom was adapted as a screenplay and was an official selection at both the Sundance and Toronto Film Festivals in 1998.  He was nominated for an Edgar Award by the Mystery Writers of America for his screen adaptation of John Grisham's Runaway Jury. As a playwright he attended the National Playwright's Conference at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre Center, twice, in 1991 and 1993, Midwest PlayLabs in 1994, and has received playwriting grants and fellowships from the Kennedy Center's Fund for New American Plays, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Rockefeller Foundation. As a freelance journalist he has written for the Destinations column of Outside Magazine and for the Chicago Tribune's Sunday Magazine. He received his MFA from the University of Iowa's Playwright's Workshop in 1995. Rick is also a commentator for NPR's All Things Considered. Currently, he is developing television series for NBC/Universal Studios, and working on a new monologue play, The Nauseated Traveler.

Rick Cleveland is also the Creator of the Award Winning One Man Show, My Buddy Bill. When Cleveland was writing for The West Wing, he and several other writer-producers were invited to the Clinton White House. According to his play, during a chance encounter with the President's chocolate brown lab Buddy, Rick not so humbly offered the President a suggestion on how to train the dog not to "piddle" on the Presidential Seal on the Oval Office's rug. Cleveland's hilarious one-man traces the friendship that continued to develop as the two met in L.A., Little Rock, London, and Amsterdam. My Buddy Bill was a 2006 Aspen Comedy Festival Winner, Best One Person Show.

Their relationship, writes Cleveland, revealed that he and the 42nd President had a lot more in common than Buddy, including white trash childhoods, a love of nonfiction ecology books, and an affinity for pick-up trucks and all things Elvis. Whether or not My Buddy Bill, a workshop production directed by William Payne, is a totally truthful account of what it feels like to be a F.O.B. (Friend of Bill), is beside the point for Cleveland.
