 Stephen Grcevich, MD Biography

Stephen Grcevich, MD (pronounced GER-suh-vich) is an accomplished physician who has balanced an active clinical practice in child and adolescent psychiatry with teaching, research and a personal call to help churches minister with families of children and teens with “hidden disabilities” – significant emotional, behavioral, developmental or neurologic conditions lacking outwardly apparent physical symptoms.

Dr. Grcevich served as the founding Board President of Key Ministry in 2002, and currently serves the ministry as Director of Strategic Initiatives. Key Ministry’s mission is to provide knowledge, innovation and support to the local church as it seeks to minister with families of children with mental illness, trauma or developmental disabilities.

In his capacity with Key Ministry, Dr. Grcevich chairs the Program Committee for Inclusion Fusion, a worldwide disability ministry web summit most recently held in November 2014, featuring Joni Eareckson Tada as keynote presenter. He is the principal author of Church4EveryChild, ranked #4 among the Top 100 children’s ministry blogs in 2015 by Ministry-To-Children.com. He was recognized by Sharecare as one of the top ten online influencers (#7) in children’s mental health in 2013. He is frequently invited to speak at national/international ministry conferences on topics pertaining to children, mental health and spiritual development, including…

• McLean Bible Church Accessibility Summit, McLean, VA (2006, 2008, 2010, 2013)

• Children’s Ministry Web Summit (2011, 2012)

• Bioethics Conference and Through The Roof Summit, Cedarville University, Cedarville OH (2011)

• Inclusion Fusion Web Summit (2011, 2014)

• Global Access Summit, Westwood Village, CA (2015)

• Spring Counseling Summit, Cincinnati Christian University (2015)

Dr. Grcevich is a 1986 graduate of the combined BS/MD program at Northeast Ohio Medical University, trained at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and Case Western Reserve University and has extensive research experience evaluating medications prescribed to children and teens for ADHD, anxiety and depression. He has been a presenter at over 35 national and international medical conferences and is a past recipient of the Exemplary Psychiatrist Award from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). He maintains current faculty appointments at two medical schools (Case Western and Northeast Ohio Medical University) and has served in numerous volunteer capacities for his national specialty society.

Dr. Grcevich serves as President and Founder of Family Center by the Falls, a group practice launched in 1993 in which he provides psychiatric care to children, adolescents and families working in close collaboration with a multidisciplinary team including another child psychiatrist, a child psychologist, several counselors and a special educator. His role on the team involves assessment of children and teens with complex emotional and behavioral conditions, formulating comprehensive treatment plans, overseeing the thoughtful and conservative use of prescription medication when necessary and appropriate and on occasion, conducting school or home visits. His observations that families served by his practice with “hidden disabilities” – emotional, behavioral, developmental or neurologic conditions lacking outwardly apparent physical symptoms – were significantly less likely than other families in the area to be actively involved in a local church led to the development of Key Ministry.

  • When kids become aggressive at church

This workshop is designed to help church staff and volunteers develop strategies for serving kids and teens at risk for behaving aggressively during ministry activities.

  • Including kids with emotional, behavior and developmental challenges in your ministry

One in five kids in the U.S. meet criteria for at least one mental health disorder, one in four experience a traumatic event by age 16, and a majority of the one in 68 kids diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders have average to high intelligence. For many, the environments in which we “do church” present subtle, but very real barriers to participation for kids with mental illness, trauma or developmental disabilities and their families. In this session, we’ll help church leaders and parents identify potential pitfalls to kids with common disabilities becoming involved and staying involved with ministry, while exploring ideas for welcoming and including ALL kids and families in your ministry…many who may not otherwise have the opportunity to hear the Gospel experience the love of Christ through the ministry of a local church.

  • Hostile Territory: Helping Families Impacted by Mental Illness Overcome Barriers to Attending Church

In this presentation, Steve identifies seven barriers families often encounter attending church with kids who experience emotional or behavioral challenges and shares seven general strategies applicable to churches of all sizes and denominations that pastors, church staff and volunteers may consider in helping families impacted by mental illness to overcome the barriers to church attendance.
