Neal E. Cutler Biography
Financial Gerontology's aim is to bring the concepts and issues of gerontology to the field of financial services, and similarly to emphasize the importance of finance to the practice of gerontology. Cutler currently serves as the President of the American Institute of Financial Gerontology, where he oversees curriculum development and certification standards.
Dr. Cutler is Research Director of National Gerometrics, Inc., a gerontology research firm in Radnor, Pennsylvania. Before returning to Pennsylvania he was (2008-2012) Executive Director of the Center on Aging of the Motion Picture & Television Fund, Woodland Hills, California, working with programs to support entertainment industry retirees who are aging in place. He continues as Adjunct Professor of Gerontology at the University of Southern California Davis School of Gerontology.
Previously, Dr. Cutler was Associate Director of The UNCG Gerontology Program at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, focusing on the connections among business and aging. Earlier in Philadelphia, he was Founding Director of the Boettner Center of Financial Gerontology at the University of Pennsylvania, and held the Boettner/Gregg Endowed Chair in Financial Gerontology, School of Business Administration, Widener University. During 1972-1990 he held a dual appointment as Professor of Political Science and Professor of Gerontology at the University of Southern California, serving also as Associate Director of the USC Andrus Gerontology Center's Institute for Advanced Study in Gerontology & Geriatrics.
Dr. Cutler has published over 200 articles and 4 books, including Advising Mature Clients: The New Science of Wealth Span Planning and Aging, Money, and Life Satisfaction: Aspects of Financial Gerontology*. He won Fulbright Professorships to the University of Helsinki and later to the University of Glasgow. In 1979-81 he was a Professional Staff Member of the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging. He is a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America, the Employee Benefit Research Institute, the American Society on Aging, and the TIAA-CREF Institute. He is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Financial Service Professionals where for 24 years he has written the "Financial Gerontology" column. Currently, Dr. Cutler is on the Board of Directors of the AARP Foundation, Washington D.C., and the Executive Council of AARP-Pennsylvania, Harrisburg.
