 Rob Frohwein Biography

As online alternative lending startups Lending Club Corp. and OnDeck Capital Inc. prepare for initial public offerings, newer startup Kabbage Inc. is preparing to expand.

Kabbage Chief Executive Rob Frohwein told Venture Capital Dispatch the company he co-founded is at a $50 million revenue run rate, an amount he expects to more than double by this time next year thanks to growth in offline businesses and new markets abroad.

While the amount is shy of the $130 million OnDeck expects to do this year and considerably less than Lending Club–the San Francisco-based startup did $87 million in revenue during the first half of 2014 alone–Mr. Frohwein said it is for good reason: “They’ve been putting out cash longer.”

Founded during the financial freeze of 2009, some two years after many of its counterparts, Kabbage spent the first two years building its underwriting technology for small-business loans. The company pulls data from several dozen online sources, including Etsy, eBay stores, QuickBooks, customer bank accounts, shipping partners and social media accounts, to extend lines of credit based on the health and needs of each company.

Interest rates range from 1.5% to 20% of the amount of capital drawn, payable within six months with interest charged only for the amount of time the money is borrowed.

Businesses can be fully funded and receive a direct deposit to their PayPal account in as little as seven minutes after applying for a loan, according to Kabbage.

Like OnDeck, Fundera Inc. and Funding Circle Holdings Ltd., Kabbage is targeting small businesses. The company announced Monday it is now funding more than $2 million per day to small businesses, or double the volume it reported six months ago.

More than 50% of the company’s loans are to brick-and-mortar businesses, compared with 7% at this time last year.

Since May, when it raised a $50 million round led by SoftBank Capital, the company has been working to enter markets in Asia, Australia and New Zealand and expanded from 90 to 120 employees. Mr. Frohwein said Kabbage would launch in Asia next through banking partnerships, but declined to provide further details.

Lending Club, which recently introduced small-business loans in addition to personal ones, filed IPO paperwork with the Securities and Exchange Commission in late August. The Wall Street Journal reported in August that OnDeck had selected bankers for its IPO.

Mr. Frohwein said while the IPOs of Lending Club and OnDeck affect his company, he feels no immediate pressure to follow suit.

Kabbage has raised $106 million in funding from SoftBank Capital, TCW/Craton, Lumia Capital, UPS’ Strategic Enterprise Fund, Peter Thomson’s Thomvest, BlueRun Ventures and Mohr Davidow Ventures.
