Aston graduate Anne ter Braak (MSc Marketing Management, 2008) is named as the first author in a forthcoming paper in the Journal of Marketing

Anne is currently Assistant Professor of Marketing at KU Leuven, Belgium. She obtained her PhD from Tilburg University in 2012. Her research interests include private labels, retailing, and buyer-supplier relationships.

The paper focusses on the profitability of private labels often also referred to as own brands or store brands; products owned by a retailer, typically bearing the retailer’s name, and only sold by the retailer that carries them.

Although private-label (PL) penetration in the consumer packaged goods industry already exceeds 40% in countries like the UK, further PL growth is expected around the world. In trying to further grow their PLs, retailers struggle with a lack of knowledge on preferable PL-supply conditions.

In their paper, Anne and her colleagues show how new realities in the PL landscape, including differential PL-sourcing relationships and differentiated, three-tiered, PL portfolios, affect the gross margins retailers realize on their PLs. Additionally, they examine the importance of the identity of the PL supplier (dual brander versus dedicated supplier).

The research will help retailers understand the potential margin implications of choosing a dedicated PL supplier versus a dual brander in this new PL environment.
