Jed Horne Biography

Ten years have passed since a catastrophe called Hurricane Katrina triggered levee breaks that flooded two-thirds of New Orleans and killed upwards of 1500 people. Pundits and politicians alike declared that the Big Easy might have suffered an irrecoverable blow. Had it? Was it time, as some suggested, to simply abandon a corrupt and declining city, a major population center that stands below sea level at a time when climate change is pushing tides and storm surge ever higher?

Ten years later, post-Katrina New Orleans is thriving. The whys and wherefores — along with what went wrong and what went right — provide lessons that cities around the world are pondering and learning from.

A Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who has reported on wars and disasters around the world, Jed Horne was city editor of the local paper when Katrina hit. He went on to write Breach of Faith, Hurricane Katrina and the Near Death of a Great American City (Random House, 2006), which was called “splendid” in a review that ran on the front cover of the New York Times Sunday Book Review and “the best of the Katrina books” on NPR’s “All Things Considered.” An earlier book, Desire Street, about a bungled Louisiana death row case, was a finalist for the American Bar Association’s Silver Scribe Award and the “Edgar” awarded by the Mystery Writers of America for the best true-crime book of the year.

No one is better equipped than Horne to rivet audiences of all kinds with the astonishing story of New Orleans since Katrina. It’s a story of inspired policy and of corrupted politics as usual, a story of big money and also great mendacity, of political arrogance and grass-roots resistance.

Horne has contributed to scholarly books on disaster recovery and, following BP’s Macondo oil well blowout in the Gulf of Mexico, the worst environmental disaster in American history, he was named senior consultant to President Obama’s National Oil Spill Commission. In 2013, Horne was featured in a documentary made for NHK, Japan’s public television channel, about recovery from the Fukushima tsunami and reactor meltdown.

Horne has been interviewed on most major television and radio news shows, including those hosted by Amy Goodman, Charlie Rose, Terry Gross, Rachel Maddow, Tavis Smiley, Tom Ashbrook and Bill O’Reilly. His articles have been published in a variety of newspapers and magazines including The Guardian, The New Republic, The Washington Post, The Village Voice and others.

Horne is a graduate of Harvard and was a reporter and editor for many years in Boston and New York before moving to New Orleans in 1988. In the early 1990s, he worked as a foreign correspondent, chiefly in Latin America. Horne has lectured at colleges and universities ranging from Harvard to U.C. Berkeley. Having focused much of his professional life on catastrophe — sticking around to dig deep after the camera crews have grabbed their money shots and left the scene — Horne also understands the delicate art of community recovery in the aftermath of disaster and can inspire audiences with what he has learned.
