Susanna Moore Biography
Susanna Moore’s books have transported readers to such diverse locales and eras as Calcutta in 1836 and New York City in 2000. She is the author of the novels "One Last Look, In the Cut" (which she adapted for the screen), "Sleeping Beauties," "The Whiteness of Bones," and "My Old Sweetheart." While working on her sixth novel (The Big Girls), Moore has also taught a weekly creative writing course to women inmates at a federal prison in Brooklyn.
Her latest book, "The Life of Objects" is set in Berlin, 1938. When Beatrice, a young Irish Protestant lace maker, is whisked away from her dreary life to join the household of Felix and Dorthea Metzenburg, she feels like she’s landed in the middle of a fairy tale. Art collectors, and friends to the most fascinating men and women of Europe, the Metzenburgs are part of a world where there is more to desire than she ever imagined. The Life of Objects illuminates Beatrice’s journey from childhood to womanhood, from naïveté to wisdom, as a continent collapses into darkness around her.
Moore grew up in Hawaii and is also the author of a travel book, published by National Geographic Directions as part of the series that includes authors Oliver Sacks, W.S. Merwin and Louise Erdrich. Moore’s book is called I Myself Have Seen It: The Myth of Hawaii. She has taught creative writing at New York University, was a Visiting Fellow at Yale and in 1999 won the Prize for Literary Achievement awarded by the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
