Pedro J. Ramírez has been one of the leading figures in the world of journalism in the Spanish language in the recent years. He has been described by The Guardian as "the most important European journalist of the last quarter century." Founder and director of the newspaper El Mundo between 1989 and 2014, his experience is key to understand the development of the media sector in Spain and Europe”. Prior to this, with only 28 years, he was appointed director of another national Spanish newspaper, Diario 16. In nine years he was able to boast this newspaper’s circulation from 15,000 to 150,000 copies per day.

In 1989 he founded El Mundo. When he left the office, in 2014, this newspaper was leader in the rankings with both its open internet site and with its digital payment platform (ORBYT) and was the second best-selling newspaper in Spain. He also made elmundo.es one of the most widely read news site in Spanish, as well as into one of the five most visited sites worldwide. El Mundo has also been the most awarded Spanish media by the Society of Newspaper Design.

Member of the Board of Directors of El Mundo for nearly a quarter century, he has also been member of the board of the International Press Institute and chairman of the Press Freedom Committee of the World Association of Newspapers. He was also chosen by the World Economic Forum as one of the Two Hundred Global Leaders of the future. In 2005 he was awarded with the Montaigne Prize given by the Alfred Toepfer Stiftung Foundation.

In March 2006, the Federation of Press Associations of Spain awarded him with the Special Prize for his career. He has also achieved the award of the foundation of the Forum Jovellanos and the Isaiah Berlin Award for his defence of liberalism.

He has published two books and numerous political and historical works like El Primer Naufragio with five editions already, and the more recent La Desventura de la Libertad. In 2012 he delivered a conference that caused major impact at the London School of Economics predicting a new golden age for newspapers thanks to the new digital revolution.
