Marvin Kalb Biography
Marvin Kalb is a Senior Fellow at the Shorenstein Center for the Press, Politics and Public Policy, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. He also serves as a Lecturer in Public Policy, and Faculty Chair for the School's Washington Programs. For twelve years Marvin Kalb was the Founding Director of the Shorenstein Center, where he also taught and lectured as the Edward R. Murrow Professor on Press and Politics.Over a distinguished 30-year career as Chief Diplomatic Correspondent for CBS News and NBC News, and as moderator of Meet the Press, Mr. Kalb has received numerous awards for excellence in diplomatic reporting, including two Peabody Prizes from the University of Georgia the DuPont Prize from Columbia University, and more than a half-dozen Overseas Press Club awards.
Mr. Kalb has hosted a number of television series for the Public Broadcasting System, including Vox Populi,a four-part series on citizen attitudes towards government, and Candidates '88. He frequently provides media commentary and analysis through radio and television interviews and Op-Ed columns in the country's leading newspapers, and is a regular guest on The Newshour with Jim Lehrer. Mr. Kalb also lectures and moderates discussion programs at journalism schools and policy-analysis organizations around the country on issues concerning the press, politics and public policy.In Washington, Mr. Kalb has led two high-profile seminar series addressing critical issues facing the business and practice of journalism today. The Kalb Report, co-sponsored by the Shorenstein Center, The George Washington University, and the National Press Club, is a monthly public affairs program that features interviews and panel discussions with both senior journalists in the profession, and the CEOs that run their companies. The Brookings/Harvard Forum is a weekly program developed in October 2001 to provide an opportunity for journalists, government officials, and the academic community to analyzecurrent developments in the War on Terrorism, and how they are covered in the press. Mr. Kalb has authored or co-authored several non-fiction books, including Kissinger, Roots of Involvement, The Nixon Memo, and One Scandalous Story, as well as two bestselling novels. His latest book, The Media and the War on Terrorism, examines the difficult balance between maintaining a free press and the government’s need to protect sensitive information.
Mr. Kalb is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He lives in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
