Cool Down: Getting Further by Going Slower
Things at work have changed a great deal over the last few years, but one thing hasn’t: people still don’t have the time to get anything done. In addition to email and smartphones, now there’s the cloud. There are passwords to memorize, change and then memorize again, and then there are all those videos of cats. Job descriptions have been modified to include the catch-all term “multitasking,” but thankfully, wireless devices have freed us up to struggle through our assignments and messages from wherever we are, 18 hours a day.
Can Time Management actually work? Yes it can, but it requires an approach that is completely different than what people expect. It’s about building relationships and understanding the power of influence. It’s about understanding that at the end of every problem there is a person, waiting for your response. The way in which you relate to each of the people in your life (including your boss) will determine how you can best manage your own time.
Before you check your wireless email for the fourth time this hour, ask yourself, is this helping you get further ahead?
In this presentation, time management and productivity expert Steve Prentice challenges our modern addiction to high-speed activity, especially email and event-to-event thinking. He suggests that people are getting locked inside a loop of surface-level urgencies, and are losing the ability to connect creatively with mentors, clients, even their managers. Working days are getting longer, and the separation between work and life is eroding. This, he calls, “death-in-harness.”
In an effort to find a better way, Steve takes a look at the growing Slow movement that is catching on in Japan and Europe, and asks whether it could possibly take root here, and indeed whether it even should. He takes the concept of “Slow” apart and rebuilds it, using terms, case studies and common sense segments that demonstrate clearly that to get further ahead faster, people do actually need to cool down.
Key Terms found in Cool Down:
Presenteeism: being at work even though sick or stressed
Death-In-Harness: constantly treading the same path with no time for improvement
The Silo Effect: the inability for people to connect and communicate creatively
Ambient Momentum: the contagious speed of expectation
Fear of the Loop: the pressure to stay in touch, even during vacations and after hours
Event-to-Event Thinking: moving from activity to activity without factoring in prep time
Parkinson’s Law: the Law that makes us think we can fit more into a day than is possible
Blue Skying: the creative mental process that happens once the mind relaxes
The currency of the new economy is changing, and it is becoming more virtual. New transaction options such as ApplePay and AndroidPay are now here. PayPal is being accepted in stores and restaurants; and increasingly, Bitcoin is emerging as an acceptable form of payment, on the retail and professional service level. Even more important than BitCoin itself is the engine behind it that makes it work, called the BlockChain. This technology has huge implications for any type of transaction that requires validation, such as contracts, mortgages, company ledgers, even diplomas and birth certificates, and thus has direct impact on the services offered by accounting firms and departments.
This workshop delivers four essential knowledge sets, delivered in clear, non-technical language. The goal of the session is for you to be able to explain these technologies with ease to your colleagues and clients and without having to memorize.
Topics include:
1. Understanding digital payments such as ApplePay and AndroidPay
2. Understanding BitCoin
• What it is and how it works
• How BitCoin differs from fiat currency
• How BitCoin is mined (manufactured)
• Using BitCoin and tracking its value
• Answering your clients’ questions about BitCoin
• Should your firm accept BitCoin as payment?
• What does the IRS or CRA think about BitCoin
3. Understanding the BlockChain
• How it works/what it does
• How BlockChain interacts with BitCoin
• How BlockChain will impact other transactions and proof documents
4. Context
• Resources to keep pace with BitCoin/Blockchain development
• What to prepare for as a accounting professional
