As a paraplegic racer, Evan was the major speaker for General Motors Mobility Program. He did this for over 7 years. In recent years, Evan as kept his personable style honed by promoting himself and his race team.
Evan competes in Short Course Off-Road racing. As I said he competes in the Pro classes in this sport. The race trucks are 900hp, 20 inch travel suspension, full size pickup class know as the Pro-2 class. Short course racing is over closed courses, in front of a live audience and televised. It is extreme racing because the course has huge jumps and rollers, with drop-offs, step-ups and fast straights. The trucks are capable of excellerating from 35mph to over 130mph in less than 1/8th of a mile on dirt. Best described as Supercross with trucks and huge horsepower.
After 23 years, Evan now would like to turn these speaking skills, developed over the last 2 decades, into a business to help others who have found themselves bound to a wheel chair for the rest of their lives. That's a morbid thought, however, a very, very serious reality.
Evan's long career has included some very heart wrenching moments and those stories coupled with the reality of being without the use of his legs, turns some of his interviews into enlighting and motivational experiences. For instance, the time his truck caught on fire on the inside.
He had experienced fires in his race vehicles before that had been confined to areas outside the vehicle or where on board extinguishers handled the danger, however this one time the extinguishers were ineffective because of location and the fire was literally a few feet from Evan in the cockpit. He knew he would not be able to unbuckle and get himself out of the truck in time.
That was the first time he feared for his life from fire. Just in the nick of time, the safety crews extinguished the fire after causing Evan's helmet to start bubbling., It was very unsettling and changed his life forever. He redesigned the interior of his race trucks and changed how hoses containing flammable liquids were routed through that area. He found a way so he could maintain his confidence inspite of his inabilities and continue to be a racer. The day he found out from the doctor that he would be crippled for life, he told himself, "Never Give Up" and that has been his motto since.
