Matthew Kennedy Biography
Matthew Kenendy is the author, most recently, of Roadshow: The Fall of Film Musicals in the 1960s (Oxford University Press, 2014), a lively history of the downfall of the Hollywood musical, which became a victim of its own success as studios rushed to catch the wave created by My Fair Lady, Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music. But everything went wrong.
A writer, film historian, and anthropologist, Kennedy is the author of three biographies of classic Hollywood: Marie Dressler: A Biography (McFarland, 1999, paperback 2006), Edmund Goulding's Dark Victory: Hollywood's Genius Bad Boy (University of Wisconsin Press, 2004), and Joan Blondell: A Life between Takes (University Press of Mississippi, 2007).
He is a film and book critic for Bright Lights Film Journal, a member of the Writers Groups of the San Francisco Silent Film Festival, and his articles have appeared in The San Francisco Chronicle, Gay & Lesbian Review Worldwide and Performing Arts. He currently teaches anthropology and film history at the City College of San Francisco and San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Kennedy is the recipient of a Fulbright Research Fellowship and a San Francisco Cable Car Media/Journalism Award.
