Jamie Gangel has been with NBC News for 25 years and has spent the last 15 years as the National Correspondent for The Today Show, covering a wide variety of stories, from interviewing Presidents, ordinary people with extraordinary stories, and covering entertainment and popular culture. Among her exclusives, Gangel has interviewed every living President from Gerald Ford to Bill Clinton, former President George H.W. Bush, and his son President W. Bush. She has also interview First Lady Laura Bush, former First Lady Barbara Bush and Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Gangel made headlines with other exclusive interviews such as Chief Justice of the United States William Rehnquist, the first interview with Linda Tripp, legendary American artist Andrew Wyeth, the only television interview with actor Robert Downey, Jr. while he was in California State prison, Florida Governor Jeb Bush on his daughter Noelle's battle with drug addiction, and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and his decision to run for office.
In the arts, Gangel has interviewed rock legend Eric Clapton, ballet star Mikhail Baryshnikov, cellist Yo Yo Ma, and opera star Cecelia Bartoli. She has also profiled many photographers including Alfred Eisenstadt, Annie Leibovitz, Herb Ritts and Lois Greenfield. Entertainment interviews include movie stars Sean Connery, Jeremy Irons, Mel Gibson, Tom Hanks, Clint Eastwood, and John Travolta.
Her features have included traveling to the Arctic Circle to observe polar bears and swimming with sharks in the Caribbean. In 1996 and 2002, Gangel profiled the major athletic stars of the Olympics and in 1993 Gangel was the first television correspondent ever allowed to bring cameras into the Central Intelligence Agency for a never before seen behind-the-scenes tour of CIA Headquarters.
Gangel has also covered stories around the world for NBC. She has traveled from Morocco to Paris and London and has covered the Iran-Iraq war as part of the Pentagon pool in the Persian Gulf. She covered stories in Africa and spent most of her time living in Central America reporting on the war between the Nicaraguan government and the Contras. In 1984 she covered the presidential campaigns of Jesse Jackson, John Glenn, and Gary Hart, and the vice-presidential campaign of Geraldine Ferraro.
