Dr. Shini Somara translates cutting-edge science into warm-hearted and engaging television. She has always enjoyed demystifying the secrets behind technology and innovation. Her work can be seen on a variety of television networks including BBC World News, BBC America, Sky and Discovery, and PBS Digital Studios. Somara is now based in London. Before then, most of her broadcast experience was gained in the USA, hosting TechKnow for Al Jazeera America from Los Angeles.
Her fascination with innovation is insatiable and diverse. She has reported on subjects including climate change, food, health, renewable energy, dark matter, and nuclear fusion. Somara feels most comfortable putting herself in the middle of an experiment or interacting with technology to provide a far more effective explanation, as seen on explainer videos for Dyson and "The Okay, but How? Show" for Sprint Business.
Somara began her career as a mechanical engineer at Brunel University, completing a bachelor's degree in engineer, and then an engineering doctorate (EngD). She specialized in fluid dynamics, where computer simulations are used to "visualize the invisible." This expertise enables engineers to understand how air flows over aircraft wings, Formula 1 cars, and within high-rise buildings.
Somara hosted "Crash Course: Physics" (2016) and "Crash Course: Engineering" (2018) for PBS Digital. She is passionate about using digital media to provide STEM education for all. She believes that knowledge is empowering.
Concerned with diversity, inclusivity, and the lack of women in STEM subjects, Somara has also launched a weekly podcast called "Innervation" (formerly known as "Scilence"). Her podcast features many female scientists she has met throughout her career.
"Innervation" provides a safe place for women to share how they survive and thrive in male-dominated industries. During her speech at the United Nations in February 2017 for Women and Girls in Science day, she highlighted the importance of role-models. "Innervation" provides a platform for such role models to be heard.
Somara is also an Imperial College London Mentor.
