Barbara Vickrey

Barbara Vickrey is a natural scientist (affiliated adjunct staff) at the RAND Corporation, professor of neurology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and a staff physician and associate director of the Parkinson's Disease Research, Education, and Clinical Center at the VA Greater Los Angeles.

Vickrey's research focuses on translating evidence from clinical trials into routine medical practice and improved patient health outcomes. She led a multi-site randomized trial that demonstrated substantially improved quality and better patient and caregiver outcomes from a "re-engineered," collaborative approach to dementia care delivery that engaged healthcare systems, community organizations, and patient/caregiver dyads. Ongoing research is creating and testing innovations in care delivery for post-stroke risk factor control in the Los Angeles County safety net healthcare system, and for Parkinson's disease care in the VA. These models aim to improve quality while improving efficiency through information technology, decision support, and community partnerships. At RAND, she co-leads a comparative effectiveness trial to analyze the benefits and costs of two approaches for coordinated dementia care delivery in a predominantly Hispanic community served by the Los Angeles County public healthcare system. She has served on several strategic planning/advisory panels to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

Vickrey received her M.D. from Duke University and her M.P.H. from UCLA. Her research training included fellowships in the UCLA Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program and at the RAND/UCLA Center for Health Policy Study.
