Active efforts on diversity, equity, and inclusion are necessary in moving society towards a more equal future.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;No matter when your event is, considering the importance of a diverse program is vital in adding varied perspectives for your audience to consider.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Many event professionals have already booked speakers for Black History Month and are now preparing for Juneteenth celebrations later this year. Although these particular events indicate times of dedicated awareness of the contributions of Black Americans, the fight towards racial equity is not relegated to certain times of year. She is the author of eight books and has lectured throughout the United States as well as in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, and South America.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent years, a persistent theme of her work has been the range of social problems associated with incarceration and the generalized criminalization of those communities that are most affected by poverty and racial discrimination. She draws upon her own experiences in the early &#8217;70s as a person who spent 18 months in jail and on trial, after being placed on the FBI&#8217;s Ten Most Wanted List.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She has also conducted extensive research on numerous issues related to race, gender, and imprisonment. Edwards has a long and storied history of activism focused on developments at the interface of sport, race, and society. The combination of his experiences as an African-American, an athlete in the 1960\u2019s, and his training in the discipline of sociology led Harry to propose that by the late 1960\u2019s America had become very complacent about race issues in sports. He ultimately called for a Black athlete boycott of the United States 1968 Olympic team in large part to dramatize the racial inequities and barriers confronting Blacks in sport and society. The movement resulted in demonstrations by Black athletes across the nation and ultimately at the Mexico City games \u2013 a movement commemorated by a 24-foot high statue on the campus at San Jose State University.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout his career, Edwards has consulted on many issues of diversity in sports, including the MLB, the NBA, and the NFL, and has persisted in efforts to compel the sports establishment to confront and to effectively address issues pertaining to diversity and equal opportunity within its rank. A scholar-activist who became spokesperson for what amounted to a revolution in sports, Edwards is now considered a leading authority on developments at the interface of race, sport, and society, and he was a pioneering scholar in the founding of the sociology of sport as an academic discipline. Since receiving his doctorate from UCLA in 1975, Dr. Carson has taught at Stanford University, where he is now Martin Luther King, Jr., Centennial Professor of History and Ronnie Lott Founding Director of the Martin Luther King, Jr., Research and Education Institute. In 1985, the late Coretta Scott King invited Dr. Carson to direct a long-term project to edit and publish an authoritative edition of King&#8217;s speeches, sermons, correspondence, publications, and unpublished writings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under Carson\u2019s direction, the King Papers Project has produced seven volumes of &#8220;The Papers of Martin Luther King, Jr&#8221;. Dr. Carson also served as senior advisor for the award-winning public television series on the civil rights movement, &#8220;Eyes on the Prize&#8221;. In addition, he has participated in the making of numerous other documentaries, including &#8220;Freedom on My Mind&#8221;, which was nominated for an Oscar in 1995, &#8220;Blacks &amp; Jews&#8221;, &#8220;Citizen King&#8221;, &#8220;Have You Heard from Johannesburg?&#8221;, &#8220;Freedom Riders&#8221;, &#8220;Black Panther: Vanguard of a Revolution,&#8221; and &#8220;I Am MLK Jr.&#8221;. The audio version of Carson&#8217;s edition of The Autobiography of Martin Luther King, Jr. won a Grammy award in 2000.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many researchers, historians, and activists who have dedicated their lives to providing the education and necessary resources for everyone to be well-versed in the history of Black Americans and the existing implications of history today. No matter what impact you wish to have on your audience, there are experienced Black speakers who can address, inform, and motivate your audience to seek more justice today by understanding the remnants of the past.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Black Entertainers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The importance of racial diversity, equity, and inclusion shows up in big ways through the content and entertainment that one has access to and engages with. These Black entertainers fight for representation by getting their voices out there and inspiring the younger generation to believe they can be whatever they want to be, regardless of their race. Her film credits include \u201cImagine That,\u201d \u201cSmallfoot,\u201d and the lead role in \u201cThe Sun Is Also a Star\u201d. Shahidi has won an NAACP Image Award in the category of &#8216;Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy&#8217; and has been included on &#8220;The 30 Most Influential Teens&#8221; list by Time magazine. In 2020 Shahidi and her business partner launched their production company 7th Sun and signed a deal with ABC Studios to produce shows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Black actors and comedians being able to take up space in a previously restricted industry opens up the door to a more inclusive future. She held the Laura Carnell Chair in English and Women&#8217;s Studies at Temple University, where she was also the first Presidential Fellow.
