Kaggle has a community of over 600,000 data scientists and has worked with companies ranging from Facebook to GE on problems ranging from predicting friendships to flight arrival times. Goldbloom works extensively to crowd-source solutions to difficult problems using machine learning.<\/p>\n<p>Before Kaggle, Goldbloom worked as an econometrician at the Reserve Bank of Australia, and before that the Australian Treasury. In 2011 and 2012, <em>Forbes<\/em>\u00a0named Anthony one of the 30 under 30 in technology; 2013, the <em>MIT Tech Review<\/em> named him one of top 35 innovators under the age of 35, and the University of Melbourne awarded him an Alumni of Distinction Award. In addition, he holds a first call honors degree in Econometrics from the University of Melbourne.<\/p>\n<h3>Robots and Our Jobs<\/h3>\n<p>In his recent TED Talk, &#8220;The Jobs We&#8217;ll Lose to Machines and the Ones We Won&#8217;t,&#8221; Goldbloom says machine learning isn&#8217;t just for simple tasks anymore like assessing credit risk and sorting mail &#8212; today, it&#8217;s capable of far more complex applications, like grading essays and diagnosing diseases. \u00a0With these advances in mind, Goldbloom addresses the uneasy question:\u00a0Will a robot do your job in the future?<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"t-15347\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\" data-time=\"15347\">&#8220;In 2013, researchers at Oxford University did a study on the future of work and t<\/span><span id=\"t-20766\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\" data-time=\"20766\">hey concluded that almost one in every two jobs have a high risk<\/span> <span id=\"t-24929\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\" data-time=\"24929\">of being automated by machines,&#8221; says Goldbloom.<\/span>\u00a0&#8220;G<span id=\"t-105561\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\" data-time=\"105561\">iven the right data, machines are going to outperform humans<\/span> <span id=\"t-108797\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\" data-time=\"108797\">at simple tasks.<\/span> <span id=\"t-109986\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\" data-time=\"109986\">A teacher might read 10,000 essays over a 40-year career.<\/span> <span id=\"t-114407\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\" data-time=\"114407\">An ophthalmologist might see 50,000 eyes.<\/span> <span id=\"t-116791\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\" data-time=\"116791\">A machine can read millions of essays or see millions of eyes<\/span> <span id=\"t-120728\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\" data-time=\"120728\">within minutes.<\/span> <span id=\"t-122456\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\" data-time=\"122456\">We have no chance of competing against machines<\/span> <span id=\"t-125338\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\" data-time=\"125338\">on frequent, high-volume tasks.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, Goldbloom says there is hope for us still.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"t-128665\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\" data-time=\"128665\">&#8220;But there are things we can do that machines can&#8217;t do,&#8221; says Goldbloom.<\/span>\u00a0&#8220;<span id=\"t-132791\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\" data-time=\"132791\">Where machines have made very little progress<\/span> <span id=\"t-135015\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\" data-time=\"135015\">is in tackling novel situations.<\/span> <span id=\"t-136893\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\" data-time=\"136893\">They can&#8217;t handle things they haven&#8217;t seen many times before.<\/span> <span id=\"t-141321\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\" data-time=\"141321\">The fundamental limitations of machine learning<\/span> <span id=\"t-143929\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\" data-time=\"143929\">is that it needs to learn from large volumes of past data. \u00a0<\/span><span id=\"t-147347\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\" data-time=\"147347\">Now, humans don&#8217;t.<\/span> <span id=\"t-149125\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\" data-time=\"149125\">We have the ability to connect seemingly disparate threads<\/span> <span id=\"t-152179\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\" data-time=\"152179\">to solve problems we&#8217;ve never seen before.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Goldbloom says the future state of any work relies in one single question:\u00a0<span id=\"t-197360\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\" data-time=\"197360\">To what extent is that job reducible to frequent, high-volume tasks,<\/span> <span id=\"t-202365\" class=\"talk-transcript__fragment\" data-time=\"202365\">and to what extent does it involve tackling novel situations?<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>View the full video here:<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gWmRkYsLzB4\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>For more information on Anthony Goldbloom, please visit our<a href=\"https:\/\/www.allamericanspeakers.com\/speakers\/412007\/Anthony-Goldbloom\" target=\"_blank\"> website<\/a>.
