{"id":11330,"date":"2016-09-04T21:19:09","date_gmt":"2016-09-04T21:19:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.allamericanspeakers.com\/blog\/?p=11330"},"modified":"2017-03-21T21:19:47","modified_gmt":"2017-03-21T21:19:47","slug":"charles-duhigg-makes-winning-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.allamericanspeakers.com\/blog\/charles-duhigg-makes-winning-team\/","title":{"rendered":"Charles Duhigg on What Makes a Winning Team"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/charlesduhigg.com\/\"><strong>Charles Duhigg<\/strong><\/a> is a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter for the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/by\/charles-duhigg\">New York<\/a><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/by\/charles-duhigg\"> Times<\/a>.\u00a0He&#8217;s also\u00a0the author of <a href=\"http:\/\/charlesduhigg.com\/books\/the-power-of-habit\/\"><em>The Power of Habit <\/em><\/a>and his latest<em>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Smarter-Faster-Better-Productive-Business\/dp\/081299339X\/\"><i>Smarter Faster Better<\/i><\/a>.<\/em>\u00a0Duhigg is also the winner of the National Academies of Sciences, National Journalism, and George Polk awards.<\/p>\n<p>In his Big Think video <em>&#8220;What Makes a Winning Team?,&#8221;<\/em> Duhigg looks at Google and <em>Saturday Night Live<\/em> <em>(SNL)\u00a0<\/em>as prime examples of productive team-making.<\/p>\n<p>He begins with Google, the company that determined that group interaction is what creates a successful team.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Groups develop these unwritten rules and that\u2019s how they function. And it turns out those group norms are the things that determined whether a team was successful or not,&#8221; says Duhigg.<\/p>\n<p>Duhigg discusses two norms that influence whether a team can work together and be productive: Quality and conversational turn taking, and high social sensitivity.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Teams in which people all speak up and where there\u2019s high social sensitivity, where people pick up on each other\u2019s nonverbal cues, those &#8211; according to the data &#8211; are the most effective teams,&#8221; says Duhigg. &#8220;If you can create this conversational turn taking, equality of voices, if you can convince people to really listen to each other and be sensitive to the nonverbal cues we\u2019re giving off then you create psychological safety. And psychological safety is the single greatest determinant in whether a team comes together or whether it falls apart.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">SNL and pyschological safety<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Duhigg says one of his\u00a0favorite examples of psychological safety is with <em>Saturday Night Live\u00a0<\/em>and its producer Lorne Michaels.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Lorne Michaels is like known for being productive, right,&#8221; says Duhigg. &#8220;But the way he runs meetings is that he makes sure everyone in the room has something to say. And if you look like you\u2019re thinking something and not verbalizing it he makes you verbalize it. Or he takes you aside and he says &#8216;what\u2019s going on with you?&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What Lorne Michaels does is he creates psychological safety and as a result, he\u2019s able to take all these huge outsize egos and all these actors and writers who are comedians (and so almost by their very nature they hate other people) and bring them all together into this cauldron of pressure, of creating a live television show in a week, then it all works out,&#8221; continues Duhigg.<\/p>\n<p>In looking at Google and\u00a0<em>SNL, <\/em>two completely different teams with completely different goals, Duhigg proves the effects that conversational sharing and psychological safety have on successful team building.<\/p>\n<p>View the full video <a href=\"http:\/\/bigthink.com\/videos\/charles-duhigg-on-the-science-of-productive-teams\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>For more information on Charles Duhigg, please visit our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allamericanspeakers.com\/\">website<\/a>.
