Written by Texas Monthly Executive Editor Mimi Swartz, Ticker follows the career of heart surgeon O.H. “Bud” Frazier and his goal to create an artificial human heart. With information from personal interviews with Frazier and others, as well as medical journals and books, Swartz has created a nonfiction book that is both informative and creative. While the book mostly focuses on Frazier’s work at the Texas Heart Institute, it also provides a background history of heart surgery, a field which was created amidst World War II.
No stranger to investigative journalism, Swartz is also the author (along with Sherron Watkins) of Power Failure: The Inside Story of the Collapse of Enron.

Set during the Korean War, If You Leave Me has elements of traditional romance, but becomes a deeper examination of the effects of war, the struggles of refugees, and women’s autonomy. It was named a “must-read” new book by Entertainment Weekly.
Kim is the Director of Writing Instruction at the Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America, a non-profit that focuses on assisting high school students from low income backgrounds. Her previous work has been published in literary outlets including The Washington Post, Literary Hub, and Nylon.

A moving memoir, Victoria Arlen’s Locked In tells the story of her childhood illness and subsequent recovery. At the age of 11, Arlen was diagnosed with a rare viral disease that impacted her ability to walk, talk, and eat. Despite losing the use of her legs for almost a decade, Arlen went on to become a Paralympics champion, winning one gold and three silver medals in the 2012 London Paralympic Games.
Currently, Arlen is a television personality on ESPN, and has reported for many of their programs, including covering the EPSY Awards Show, the X-Games, and the Invictus Games. She was cast in Season 25 of Dancing with the Stars in 2017, where she went on to become a semi-finalist.
