Shiza Shahid is an inspiration. Born in Islamabad, Pakistan, Shiza has dedicated her life to helping the oppressed members of society. She has spent time working in women’s prisons, earthquake-relief camps, and refugee communities. Most notably, Shiza is known as the co-founder of The Malala Fund and NOW Ventures.
Malala Fund and a Quest for Education
What started as a holiday camp for young girls in Islamabad changed the course of Shiza’s life forever. The 26 girls, who lived in a Taliban-controlled area and were forbidden from attending school, traveled from five hours away to attend this camp. This venture was created to boost confidence, introduce mentors to the participants, and offer potential for a better future. Shiza mentored one girl in particular who attended this camp- Malala Yousafzai. Malala spent years of activism towards the education of females and the Taliban learned of her efforts. In 2012, Malala received a bullet to the head at the hands of the Taliban. When Shiza learned about this tragedy, she ended her career to start a foundation with Malala to support global education efforts.
Shiza is well-known and commended for her work, and has been the recipient of many awards as a thought leader. She was named one of TIME’s “30 Under 30 People Changing the World,” Forbes “30 Under 30 – Social Entrepreneurs” and a Tribeca Institute Disruptive Innovator. Numerous publications have featured Shiza, including Forbes, Fast Company, Elle, Glamour, Town and Country, The Edit, CNN, ABC, Al Jazeera, MSNBC and more. A frequent speaker, she is invited to important conferences and events, including Aspen Ideas Fest, Milken Global Institute, Forbes Women, Fortune Most Powerful Women, Inc Women, Women Moving Millions, World Economic Forum and others.
