15 Must-See Performances at Outside Lands 2017

Kali Uchis
Singer-Songwriter, Record Producer & Music Video Director

Performing: Friday, August 11, 2:05 PM

Colombian-born and Virginia-raised singer Kali Uchis released her first studio-recorded EP, Por Vida, this February and has already collaborated with artists/producers including Tyler The Creator, Snoop Dogg, Diplo, and Rick Rubin. Her first studio release has garnered praise from the likes of Billboard, Pitchfork, Noisey and The Fader. With a sound that mirrors Amy Winehouse and 60s soul, Kali makes the old sound new again–with a funky twist–and is well on her way to becoming a household name.

Grace Mitchell
Pop Singer

Performing: Friday, August 11, 2:55 PM

If one wanted to describe 18 year old Grace Mitchell in a nutshell one might say she’s a post-Yeezus, highly aware pop disruptor with a lifelong reverence for Tori Amos and a frenetic, fiery sound that raises a middle finger to the zeitgeist while possessing the power to reshape it- but that’s just the beginning. In order to properly convey that style, the Oregon native locked herself in a Los Angeles studio with Mark Foster of Foster The People back in 2014. When they emerged, she came armed with an explosive sonic concoction that’s as danceable as it is deadly.

Tove Lo
Pop Singer-Songwriter

Performing: Friday, August 11, 3:25 PM

Swedish singer/songwriter Tove Lo was born Ebba Tove Elsa Nilsson on October 29, 1987 in a suburb of Stockholm. Beginning to write poetry and short stories at a young age, she went on to study at the famous Rytmus Musikergymnasiet — a music-oriented high school comparable to the U.K.’s BRIT School. Lo gradually developed her own idiosyncratic style of epic, electronically tinged songwriting with raw, brutally honest lyrics, influenced as much by ’80s pop as by contemporary EDM.

Little Dragon
Swedish Electronic Band

Performing: Friday, August 11, 4:45 PM

On the surface, the quiet port city of Gothenburg doesn’t seem like it would harbor much soul music but it comes through in the dreamy rhythmical shifting moody creature that is Little Dragon. The four-piece band blends R&B, new wave, electronica and experimental pop. While their recordings are always impressive, it is in the live setting where the Dragon really comes alive. Seemingly loose and improvisational but actually tight as a drum, Bodin, Wirenstrand and Wallin dig a deep pocket that might make James Brown proud.

Sleigh Bells
Noise Pop Musical Duo

Performing: Friday, August 11, 5:15 PM

Sleigh Bells is an American noise pop music duo. The group released their debut album, Treats, on May 11, 2010. Based in Brooklyn, NY, Sleigh Bells is composed of Derek E. Miller (songwriter, guitarist, producer) and Alexis Krauss (vocals). The duo met and formed in 2008 when Miller was waiting tables on Alexis and her mother at a neighborhood Brazilian restaurant called Miss Favela. Miller mentioned he was looking for a female vocalist to work with on a musical project, for which Alexis’ mother immediately volunteered her.

Future Islands
Indie Synthpop Band

Performing: Friday, August 11, 6:50 PM

Future Islands are a synthpop band based in Baltimore, Maryland, signed to 4AD. The band is composed of Gerrit Welmers (keyboards and programming), William Cashion (bass, acoustic and electric guitars), and Samuel T. Herring (words and vocals). Future Islands formed in January 2006 in Greenville, North Carolina. The band met and formed while studying art at East Carolina University in Greenville. In 2006, Cashion, Herring, and Welmers formed Future Islands with Erick Murillo, who played an electronic drum kit.

Temples
Rock Band

Performing: Saturday, August 12, 1:50 PM

Temples are an English rock band, formed in Kettering in 2012 by singer-guitarist James Edward Bagshaw and bassist Thomas Edward James Walmsley.  They played The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and festivals including Glastonbury, Bonnaroo, Primavera Sound, Lollapalooza, amongst many others. All the elements people loved with that record remain intact on their album Volcano, but this time around, there’s a noticeable evolution presented from the outset. There are sun-dazed numbers and lysergic dream-pop songs and those where synth and mellotron interweave to beguiling effect.

Warpaint
All-Girl Quartet

Performing: Saturday, August 12, 3:10 PM

They weave intricate guitar lines, hypnotic vocals, and driving post-punk rhythms into gorgeous, sprawling songs that skirt the line between the soundscapes of psychedelia and intimacy. Warpaint is Emily Kokal (guitar/vocals), Theresa Wayman (guitar/vocals), Jenny Lee Lindberg (bass/vocals), and Stella Mozgawa (drums/keys/vocals). Onstage, Warpaint’s disarmingly authentic package can shake a room into a dance frenzy, while simultaneously holding it in a trance-like dreamworld. Playing to many captivated audiences, Warpaint has opened for Yeasayer, Black Heart Procession, and The Slits to name a few.

Vance Joy
Singer-Songwriter

Performing: Saturday, August 12, 5:10 PM

Vance Joy has an original voice that at first he kept to himself. Feeding on a diet of The Pogues, Paul Kelly and whatever else was playing, he cut his teeth performing at open mike nights in Melbourne. It is folk music with pop influences. His songs capture the familiar pulse of everyday experiences in a unique and celebratory manner. His lyrics will reach out to you and hold on for a moment.

Empire of the Sun

Performing: Saturday, August 12, 8:55 PM

Maggie Rogers
Singer-Songwriter

Performing: Sunday, August 13, 2:30 PM

First known for her 2016 viral hit “Alaska,” singer/songwriter Maggie Rogers combines folk, dance, and R&B into a powerfully emotional yet crowd-pleasing sound. Growing up in rural Maryland, Rogers began playing harp at age seven and loved the music of Gustav Holst and Vivaldi. Rogers united the different strands of her music with huge success in 2016 with “Alaska,” a song she wrote in 15 minutes about a hiking trip for a masterclass with Pharrell Williams. A video of a visibly moved Williams listening to the song went viral that June, resulting in millions of views as well as hundreds of thousands of plays of The Echo and Blood Ballet.

Louis The Child
EDM Musical Duo

Performing: Sunday, August 13, 5:05 PM

Louis The Child is an electronic dance music (EDM) musical duo comprised of Freddy Kennett and Robby Hauldren. The duo is known for their ability to choose songs (to remix) with deep, emotive lyrical arrangements. The Chicago-natives are fresh off of their break-out year in 2014, which included playing Chicago’s biggest electronic music festival, Spring Awakening. In 2016, the duo collaborated with New Orleans rapper Pell as Pellican Child, releasing the single “Turn Me Down” from a joint EP that would arrive in 2017.

How to Dress Well
Project by Singer & Producer Tom Krell

Performing: Sunday, August 13, 5:55 PM

How To Dress Well is the stage name of songwriter and producer Tom Krell. His career began in 2009 when, upon moving from Brooklyn to Berlin, he posted a string of free EPs in anonymity on his blog. Combining a gorgeous falsetto with fractured R&B-influenced beats, an instinctive ear for devastating melody, and sound collage composition, Krell’s debut album “Love Remains” plucked from those early efforts and offered a window into a startlingly artistic imagination.

ScHoolboy Q
Rapper, Hip-Hop Recording Artist

Performing: Sunday, August 13, 6:40 PM

For the first time in a long time, Hip Hop can genuinely say that a new generation of MC’s have arrived. Sure, there are those who helped birth the culture and music and people who can say they grew up with it. But now, you are witnessing perhaps the first generation that can say they were raised on Hip Hop almost exclusively. If you don’t agree, you’re probably not listening to enough ScHoolboy Q. If the hits on Habits & Contradictions are any indication, ScHoolboy Q will surely have his share of haters too. But it’s a safe bet that he will have even more supporters.
