John Lithgow

John Lithgow is recognized for his extensive work in American theater, film, and television. Lithgow studied at Harvard University and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art before establishing a diverse career on stage and screen. He has received multiple honors, including seven Emmy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, a Laurence Olivier Award, and two Tony Awards, along with nominations for two Academy Awards, a British Academy Film Award, four Grammy Awards, and four Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Lithgow's stage career provided the foundation for his subsequent achievements. He won a Tony Award shortly after his Broadway debut in David Storey's "The Changing Room." He has appeared on Broadway more than 20 times, earning additional Tony nominations, another Tony Award, four Drama Desk Awards, and induction into the Theatre Hall of Fame. Lithgow's film career includes notable performances such as his role in "The World According to Garp," which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He received a second consecutive Oscar nomination for his performance in "Terms of Endearment." Lithgow's filmography also includes roles in "Footloose," "Cliffhanger," and as the voice of Lord Farquaad in "Shrek."

On television, Lithgow has achieved significant recognition. He starred as Dick Solomon in the NBC sitcom "3rd Rock from the Sun," winning three Primetime Emmy Awards for Best Actor in a Comedy Series. His portrayal of the Trinity Killer in "Dexter" earned him a Golden Globe Award. Lithgow also received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Winston Churchill in the Netflix drama "The Crown." His television work further includes portrayals in "Bombshell" and "Killers of the Flower Moon," as well as a role in the conspiracy thriller "Conclave."

Lithgow has continued to work in both American and British theater, portraying Roald Dahl in the West End production of the Mark Rosenblatt play "Giant" at the Royal Court Theatre, a performance that earned him the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor. The production later transferred to Broadway, where Lithgow won a Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play for "Giant." His additional roles include appearances in the HBO Harry Potter series and the film "Jimpa," in which he played activist Jim Hyde.

In addition to acting, Lithgow is an author and advocate for the arts. His memoir, "Drama: An Actor's Education," was published by HarperCollins. He has written and illustrated the "Dumpty Trilogy," a series of political satire books that appeared on the New York Times non-fiction bestseller list. Lithgow has also published nine picture books for children, recorded three song albums, and performed children's concerts with major American orchestras. His honors include the Fulbright Lifetime Achievement Medal, induction into The American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Harvard, where he was the first actor to deliver the university's Commencement Address.
