A decade and a half ago, three teenage boys from the streets of Newark, New Jersey made a pact: they would stick together-go to college-graduate-and become doctors. Surrounded by negative influences and having few positive role models, made it a not so easy feat. Now, over fifteen years later, these three men have overcome countless obstacles and proudly bear the subtitle of doctor.

Dr. Hunt is a Board Certified Internist and Medical Director at St. Peter’s University Hospital’s How Lane Adult Family Health Center, and Clinical Assistant professor of Medicine at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Dr. Jenkins presently serves as a faculty member of Community Health at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Dr. Davis is a Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physician at East Orange General Hospital and St. Michaels Medical Center. He is also consultant for the Violence Prevention Institute focusing on gang awareness and preventative medicine in Essex County.

Growing up in the streets of Newark, they know first hand, the pressures and struggles of life in the inner city and how difficult it can be going at it alone. Determined not to become victims of their environment, the trio stood firm in their mission and together became one of the most remarkable success stories of inspiration, dedication and determination. Dr. Sampson Davis asserts, “Strength comes from knowing that the power to overcome adversity and prevail lies within one’s self and you have to first realize that. Once realized, you have to accept accountability for your life and take the necessary steps to turn hopes and dreams into realities.”

The Three Doctors are frequently asked their formula for becoming prominent, successful men, and doctors at that… and while their lists are long, they are certain that success comes in many different forms as does talent. Dr. Jenkins comments on some of the fundamental elements they all needed, “Learning patience was key to our success. Our children are in an age where they want everything now and instant success is not only rare, but also deceitful. At some point you need a strategic plan on how you propose to live your life and carry out your goals for the long-term and that is just a starting point.”

The Three Doctors received the prestigious Essence Award in 2000 for their accomplishments and leadership. In addition to their award, their groundbreaking television special aired on Lifetime Television during a special segment entitled “Things We Do For Love”. Perhaps one of the greatest gifts one can give is the gift of self and these three men do it often and wholeheartedly. Dr Hunt adds, “We have a compelling passion for speaking and telling our story. This is not to boast or brag, we just recognize that we are in head-to-head combat with drugs, mental and physical illnesses, teenage pregnancy and all kinds of abuse and we accept the responsibility of making a difference by being role models and touching lives.” These young doctors also appeared on the Oprah Winfrey show, where Ms. Winfrey remarked--“You guys are bigger than Rock Stars!” She then added, “I think you guys are the premier role models of the world!”

Their effect on their communities has indeed been tremendous. Their book,

The Pact: Three Young Men Make A Promise And Fulfill A Dream was a New York Times Best Seller. It is being used at high schools, colleges and universities all over the country. “Their life is like a social study”, one professor commented. Some say it’s a movie waiting to happen. These three young men continue to speak out on life’s challenges and together symbolize a new walk, talk and attitude about facing the world. Children can identify with them, adults, and at-risk teens- Everybody. Bill Cosby has said that “They are an inspiration to young people everywhere, and their message is one that can transform the world”. Perhaps it’s because of the impact of their message, perhaps the essence of their story. The reason is irrelevant, the results are remarkable. This is further evidenced by their inclusion in 40 of The Most Inspiring African Americans, a book published by Essence. Oprah Winfrey, Michael Jordan, Halle Berry, Denzel Washington, Serena and Venus Williams were also among those included in this book. The Three Doctors are young visionaries that bring forth new hope and today are recognized among the most sought after motivational speakers, imparting their inspirational message across the country.

As The Three Doctors traveled around, people kept urging them to write a book for children. We Beat The Street (April 2005) is just the book the doctors ordered. It is a book of life lessons demonstrated through experiences by The Three Doctors targeted for children and parents. They are also the founders of The Three Doctors Foundation, which conducts outreach based upon the mission to inspire and create opportunities for communities through education, mentoring and health awareness. The impact made by these unique individuals is therefore multi-faceted as they continue to address critical social and health issues through their foundation, in their medical careers and through nationally syndicated radio and television appearances.
