The Three Doctors Sampson Davis MD
Dr. Sampson Davis' life has come gratifyingly full-circle.
Born on January 19, 1973 at The Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark, NJ, little did anyone know that less than thirty years later, fate would bring him back to that same place - this time, as a doctor.
As the fifth of six children in one of New Jersey's poorest cities, Dr. Davis grew up in cramped living quarters, surrounded by fragmented families, crime, and drugs. Still, he was a good student, able to strike the fragile balance between being smart, yet socially acceptable on the streets. It was the skill, Dr. Davis says, most critical to his survival.
While attending University High, one of Newark's magnet schools, Dr. Davis met Rameck Hunt and George Jenkins, two fellow students who would drastically alter the course of his life. The three bonded immediately, sharing the same dedication to making more of their lives than Newark usually provided. They became each other's primary support system, studying and socializing almost exclusively together. As they approached graduation, the three were encouraged to apply to Seton Hall's Pre-Medicine, Pre-Dental Plus program, a curriculum specifically designed to encourage under represented minorities to pursue health-related careers. Dr. Davis applied and was accepted to this selective program, as were Hunt and Jenkins. It was then that the three set off together to pursue their dreams of becoming doctors. Four years later they headed off, still together, for the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. In May 2002, they again stood side by side, accepting their medical degrees.
Drs. Davis, Hunt and Jenkins are now known affectionately as The Three Doctors, role models for inner city youth everywhere. They travel extensively, talking openly and honestly about their hard times and the determination they needed to find deep within themselves in order to be successful. They do this to reach individuals of all ages sitting in the audience. Dr. Davis speaks about his own life with complete candor, sounding more like a big brother than a doctor. His message is always one of courage - courage to cope with life's difficult circumstances, courage to set goals for yourself and most importantly, the courage to accept responsibility for achieving them.
Today, Dr. Davis is the Attending Emergency Room Physician at The Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark, New Jersey. Along with Drs. Hunt and Jenkins, he is also a founder of The Three Doctors Foundation, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to bringing health, education and mentoring outreach opportunities to inner city youth. Their inspirational journey has been profiled in People Magazine, Reader's Digest and on The Oprah Winfrey Show. In May, the doctors were the recipient of the 2000 Essence Award and in 2002, their book, The Pact: Three Young Men Make A Promise and Fulfill A Dream, became a national must-read, spending six weeks on the New York Times bestseller list.
