Pat Summerall is considered by most critics and fans to be the premier play-by-play man for network coverage of the National Football League, which he has been announcing since 1962. For 17 years, he has played the straight man to John Madden's vibrant, high-energy football commentary. Summerall's steady, good-humored play-by-play and game analysis has made him one of the most trusted, popular announcers in sports.
Since he and Madden started working together in 1981, their voices have become Sunday mainstays to football fans everywhere. He began his association with the NFL after graduating from the University of Arkansas. Drafted into the NFL in 1952, Summerall went on to play for the Chicago Cardinals and the New York Giants. The placekicker and tight end finished his nine-year career in 1961, playing in three NFL Championship games.
Summerall has worked 13 Super Bowls on television. The broadcast of Super Bowl XVI in 1982 is still the highest-rated sports program of all time. His work has garnered extensive praise and in 1994, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences honored him with a Lifetime Achievement Award for Sports.
