First American to Win an Olympic Gold Medal in Cross-Country Skiing; Breast Cancer Survivor
Kikkan Randall Biography
Kikkan Randall is recognized as one of the most accomplished cross-country skiers in American history. She became the first American to win an Olympic gold medal in cross-country skiing, partnering with Jessie Diggins in the team sprint. Randall was also the first American woman to win a Nordic World Championship medal, the first to win a World Championship gold, the first to win a World Cup race, and the first American woman to secure a World Cup overall discipline Crystal Globe.
Randall competed in five Olympic Games, making her debut at age 19 in Salt Lake City. At the 2006 Olympic Winter Games, she finished ninth in the individual sprint, which at the time was the best cross-country Olympic result by a U.S. woman. Over the following years, Randall continued to set new standards in the sport. She won a silver medal in the individual sprint at the World Championships, becoming the first American woman to earn a world championship medal in cross-country skiing. She later captured three consecutive World Cup sprint season titles, making her the first U.S. female cross-country skier to win an overall World Cup title in any discipline.
The highlight of Randall's career occurred at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, where she and Diggins won the gold medal in the team sprint. This historic achievement marked the first Olympic gold for the United States in cross-country skiing and brought significant attention to the sport. Throughout her 17-year career, Randall collected 29 World Cup medals, three World Championship medals, and one Olympic medal. She and Diggins also won the world championship gold medal in the team sprint, becoming the first Americans to claim a cross-country skiing world championship title.
In addition to her athletic achievements, Randall was elected to the International Ski Federation's Athletes Commission, serving for eight years, and was later elected to the International Olympic Committee's Athletes Commission.
Shortly after her Olympic victory, Randall was diagnosed with Stage 2 triple positive breast cancer. She approached her diagnosis with determination, and less than a year after completing radiation treatment, she finished a marathon in 2 hours, 55 minutes, 12 seconds. Randall's experience with cancer led her to work with several cancer-fighting charities and to partner with author Shannon Pierce on the children's book "Hunter's Hero: My Mommy Has Breast Cancer," which helps children understand a parent's cancer diagnosis.
Randall's life and career are chronicled in the documentary "KIKKAN," which follows her journey from childhood through her U.S. Ski career and return to Alaska. The film has been screened at events such as the World Cup Nordic Ski event in Minnesota and the American Birkebeiner in Wisconsin, with proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society, National Nordic Foundation, and other charities.
Randall serves as executive director of the Nordic Ski Association of Anchorage, contributing to the development of cross-country skiing at the grassroots level. She also works as a motivational speaker and is president of the USA division of Fast and Female, a charity focused on keeping girls healthy and active in sports. Randall has been recognized by the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame for her contributions to cross-country skiing and her role in advancing the sport in the United States.
