Orthopedic Microsurgeon & Extreme Medicine Expert; Author of "Surviving the Extremes"; Explorer-in-Residence at American Museum of Natural History
Ken Kamler Biography
Dr. Ken Kamler is an American orthopedic microsurgeon who practices hand surgery in New York and specializes in extreme medicine in remote regions worldwide. Kamler is recognized for his expertise in hand reconstruction, finger reattachment, and wilderness medicine, focusing on the human body's response to extreme environments and endurance challenges.
Kamler's fieldwork spans diverse and challenging locations, including treating bear bites in the Arctic, frostbite in the Antarctic, setting fractures in the Andes, and providing care for scuba divers in the Galapagos. He has performed surgery in the Amazon rainforest and in a NASA undersea analogue space capsule, and has participated in zero-gravity research aboard NASA's DC-9 Vomit Comet, testing robotic systems for potential use in emergency surgery on the International Space Station and Mars. Kamler also served as the expedition doctor on Jeff Bezos' salvage mission to recover the Apollo 11 first-stage rocket engine from a depth of 14,000 feet.
Kamler has completed six expeditions to Mount Everest. Four of these were with the National Geographic Society, where he contributed to projects measuring the mountain's height and tectonic movement using laser telescopes and GPS receivers. On two expeditions, he served as Chief High Altitude Physician for NASA-sponsored research on human physiological responses to extreme altitude. Kamler climbed to within 900 vertical feet of Everest's summit and was the only doctor high on the mountain during the storm that claimed 12 lives. His treatment of survivors was depicted in the book "Into Thin Air" and the IMAX film "Everest." This experience formed the basis for his TED Talk, "Medical Miracle on Everest," where he discusses the climbers' efforts to save lives in extreme conditions and explores the medical recovery of a climber who survived prolonged burial in snow.
Kamler is the author of "Doctor on Everest" and "Surviving the Extremes: What Happens to the Body and Mind at the Limits of Human Endurance," both of which draw on his personal experiences in expedition medicine. He has contributed a monthly column to National Geographic Adventure and served as a feature writer and contributing editor for Popular Mechanics. Kamler has appeared in documentaries on IMAX, National Geographic, Discovery, and History Channel, and has been a guest on national radio and television, including BBC World Service, Today Show, Good Morning America, CNN, Fox News, and The Oprah Winfrey Show.
Kamler has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as a Top Doctor, by Newsday as one of the Best Doctors on Long Island, and by New York Magazine as one of the Best Doctors in New York. He is a recipient of the Lowell Thomas Distinguished Explorer Award and The Explorers Club Award for Heroism. Kamler has served as Explorer-in-Residence at the American Museum of Natural History, a consultant for NASA and National Geographic Adventure, and a commentator for Outdoor Life Network and CNN. As a former vice president of The Explorers Club, Kamler shares insights on human resilience, medical innovation, and survival in extreme environments.
