Biography of Jung Lin

 Her reviews throughout the world have been luminous. Martin Canin, her distinguished teacher at The Juilliard School called her “one of the most exceptional pianists I have encountered, a magical artist.” One review exclaimed, “Jung Lin is the song bird of the piano.” Garrick Ohlsson adds, “Jung Lin is a pianist of extraordinary musicianship, with a glowing tone and pure poise on the concert platform.”

Following her 2006-2007 debuts with the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra and the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra and a recital at New York City’s historic St. Bartholomew’s Church, Jung Lin’s current season is highlighted by performances with the Las Cruces and DuPage symphony orchestras.

A native of Taiwan, Jung Lin began her musical career as a nationally known prodigy, conducting her own orchestral works at age 12, winning numerous competitions, and receiving featured coverage on Taiwan’s major news program, “90 Minutes.” At 16, she began studies in piano and, under the American master David Diamond, in composition at The Juilliard School in New York City, where her symphonic poem, The Black Wedding, was given its premiere by the Juilliard Symphony under Miguel Harth-Bedoya. Ms. Lin graduated with honors from Juilliard. She premiered her Sonatine at Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall.

One of the major Chopin pianists of her generation, Jung Lin has given numerous all- Chopin recitals, and in 1999, the sesquicentennial of Chopin’s death, she was heard at several prestigious venues, including the International Keyboard Institute & Festival at the Mannes College of Music, the Summit Festival in China and the Kosciuszko Polish Foundation. In October 1999, she was a featured artist at New York City’s Alice Tully Hall for a Gala Chopin concert that included 25 world renowned pianists.

Jung Lin is an avid champion of the neglected Russian composer Nicolai Medtner, and her repertoire of the great Russian composer is extensive. She makes it a point to include works by Medtner on each of her recital programs. Some recent highlights of this rising young star are appearances with the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic, at Palm Beach’s Society of the Four Arts, The Community Theater Series in Morristown, and a special recital for James E. McGreevy, then Governor of New Jersey. She has also been heard live on The New York Times radio station WQXR in its series “Russian Nights.” In 2003-2004, she appeared in four concerts to honor Paderewski, and five concerts, “Remembering Rubinstein.” In New York City, Ms. Lin has presented two enthusiastically received recitals at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts’ Alice Tully Hall.

During the summer of 2004, Jung Lin was chosen by WQXR to give three recitals at the New York Botanical Garden, performing to capacity audiences and heard worldwide on wqxr.com.That summer also included a recital performance in Pennsylvania, attended by the former Governor, William Scranton who wrote, “Once in a great while, an occasion occurs which is memorable forever.” The recital was broadcast on the North Eastern Pennsylvania public radio station WVIA, and was hailed by the station as “A highlight of its 30th Anniversary celebrations.” She also performed Bach at the Rosalyn Tureck Tribute at the International Keyboard Institute and Festival at the Mannes Collage of Music, which was heard throughout the United States on NPR, as well as three concerts at the Music Festival of the Hamptons on Long Island.

Jung Lin made her recital debut in Amsterdam in 2005, returning the next year for a performance on the Concertgebouw’s Sunday chamber music series that was broadcast live throughout The Netherlands. In summer 2006, her Chicago recital for the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts was broadcast live on WFMT-FM and telecast on Channel 21. She also participated in the Cervantes Institute’s live broadcast of Spanish piano music, “In the Gardens of Spain,” and performed at the prestigious Aspen Ideas Festival.
