|
Andretti was born on March 12, 1963 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; he is a nephew of open-wheel racing legend Mario Andretti and cousin of Mario's son Michael. John drives the number 4 Lucas Oil Chevrolet for Morgan-McClure Motorsports. John has 339 Nextel cup starts with two wins. His first win came while driving for Cale Yarborough in 1997 at Daytona International Speedway, and his second while driving for Richard Petty in 1999 at Martinsville Speedway.
Son of racing legend Mario Andretti, Michael has himself carved out a very impressive career as a race car driver. Andretti began his racing career in 1980, soon after graduatiing from high school in the Formula Ford ranks. He joined the premier North American open-wheel series Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) in 1983 and soon established himself as a threat to win races. He won his first at Long Beach, in 1986, and to date has won a CART record 38 races, including the season championship in 1991, while driving for co-owner, screen legend Paul Newman. The only time Andretti did not do well was his infamous sorty into Formula 1, in 1993, where a series of accidents and mechanical woes ended his races. Andretti has won more than $16 million dollars in prize money and taken 31 pole positions. He is definitely one of America's top names and drivers in the sport.
