Detailed Biography of Jim Wilson
|
|
Jim serves as a home garden consultant to Fafard, Inc., makers of Fafard potting soils for indoor plants, outdoor containers and hanging baskets.
In his career in horticulture, Jim worked in management positions with a garden seed company and a manufacturer of controlled-release fertilizers in California. He served seven years as Executive Secretary of All-America Selections, where his work took him to several foreign countries. He and his wife, Jane, operated a commercial herb farm for seven years, serving fine restaurants with fresh herbs.
He is a prolific garden writer and lecturer, with a number of recent books to his credit. Jim's books by Houghton Mifllin Company include Landscaping with Container Plants, Landscaping with Wildflowers, Landscaping with Herbs, and Landscaping with Native Trees. The latter was co-authored with landscape architect Guy Sternberg, a member of the International Oak Society.
In 1996, with Cathy Wilkinson Barash, he co-authored The Cultivated Gardener, published by Simon and Schuster. His recent book, South Carolina Gardener's Guide, was released by Cool Springs press in 1997. In November, 1999, Taylor Publishing released Jim's Bulletproof Flowers for the South (flowers and foliage plants that resist heat and humidity).
Jim is a South Carolina Certified Master Gardener, and for his advocacy of Master Gardening, has been named an Honorary Master Gardener by several states. He is a Fellow of the Garden Writers Association of America, and in 1995 was installed in it's Hall of Fame. He is a Life Member of the National Council of State Garden Clubs. Recently, Jim lectured at Disney's EPCOT Center as part of their "America's Great Gardener" series in conjunction with the American Horticultural Society.
Jim is a real gardener with over 50 years experience educating and inspiring home gardeners. He has authored many gardening books and instructional literature. Most people recognize him for his years as the co-host of The Victory Garden on PBS. Jim Wilson is also the national spokesperson for the Plant a Row for the Hungry program.
