Detailed Biography of Ernestine Bradley
|
Ernestine Schlant Bradley is a native of Germany and a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia, where she also obtained her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Comparative Literature.
She has taught French at Spelman College, Atlanta; German at the State University of NY at Stony Brook, and was for many years Professor of German and Comparative Literature at Montclair State University in Upper Montclair, New Jersey. She has held visiting professorships at Yale and Columbia universities and is the recipient of various awards and fellowships, including a fellowship at the prestigious Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. She is currently teaching at the New School University in New York City.
Dr. Schlant Bradley has authored numerous articles on 20th century German and Austrian literature and published two books on the Austrian writer and philosopher Hermann Broch; with J. Thomas Rimer she co-edited Legacies and Ambiguities: Postwar Fiction and Culture in West Germany and Japan. She wrote The Language of Silence, which offers an analysis of West German literature and its efforts to come to terms with the Holocaust and her most recent book, The Way Home: A German Childhood, an American Life, recounts her rocky childhood in Germany during and after WWII and her move to the U.S. as an adult.
Dr. Schlant Bradley is married to former U.S. Senator Bill Bradley of New Jersey and is the mother of two daughters.
