Detailed Biography of Elaine Pasqua
|
|
In 1989 Elaine Pasqua's mother and stepfather were diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. Due to the stigma surrounding this virus, she honored her parents wishes and kept their infectious status a secret. Witnessing the ravages of this disease as she cared for them, Elaine vowed to speak out so others would not have to experience the pain and loss that twice touched her family. Since 1995 she has been spreading the message that AIDS is everyone's disease.
As a nationally recognized speaker, Elaine has combined her life experiences, enthusiasm and passion to positively influence thousands of students at hundreds of colleges and universities across the United States. Through emotional stories, playful humor, interactive activities, and outrageous songs, Elaine has developed a powerful model for educating diverse groups of students about high-risk behaviors and personal empowerment to make healthy choices.
She is a past member of the Pennsylvania HIV Prevention Community Planning Committee. Her experiences as a faculty member of the NJ AIDS Education and TrainingCenter, and as a dental hygienist have provided Elaine with a thorough understanding of the technical aspects of HIV/AIDS, as well as general health and well being.
Elaine is the president of Project Prevent, a non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide AIDS prevention education to students ranging from the elementary through high school level. Parents, teachers, and health professionals have also gained valuable insight and teaching strategies from her motivational programs. Elaine has been featured in USA Today, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Knight Ridder News Service and Time Warner Cable TV. She has also been instrumental in organizing events for AIDS awareness programming for the JamesAMichenerArt Museum involving national political figures.
Elaine resides in Doylestown, Pennsylvania with her husband and two sons.
Mission Possible: Guiding Our Children to Responsible Choices
We want the best for our children. For years we help prepare them for academic success; hours of assistance with school projects, papers, studying for tests, hiring tutors and preparations for SAT’s. How much time do we dedicate to preparing our children for the challenges of peer pressure to engage in high-risk activities? Your child’s decision to follow their peers can lead them to make a choice that may change the rest of their life.
Forty one percent of all college academic difficulties are alcohol related. Twenty eight percent of college dropouts are due to alcohol abuse. Alcohol related injuries, violence, and deaths are rampant on campuses across the United States. One in four people under the age of 21 in this country has contracted a sexually transmitted disease and students are engaging in sexual activity at earlier ages. Club drug and marijuana use is escalating.
This program is for parents of children of all ages. Skills essential for resisting peer pressure and recognizing negative effects of high-risk behaviors begin at an early age. Elaine Pasqua has worked with thousands of college, high school, middle, elementary students, and wellness professionals across the United States. Elaine’s open and non-judgmental demeanor allows students to share openly with her. She has heard all of the stories and is aware of the high-risks facing students today. Parents cannot help their children to recognize these risks unless they know the challenges that their children are facing.
Elaine enlightens parents about high-risk trends in middle schools, high schools and colleges as she discusses issues surrounding alcohol, drug use and unsafe sex. Instead of having that “one talk” with their children, parents will learn how to keep that important ongoing conversation with them. Parents learn how they can talk comfortably and openly about sensitive topics such as sex and substance abuse. Important parenting skills that will enhance a child’s self esteem and self-respect are shared. Elaine also enlightens parents about the issues that they need to discuss with their children before they send them off to college and how to set them up in an environment on their campus that is conducive for learning and not compromised by others who are partying. Participants come out of this program with the skills necessary to confront these difficult issues in an increasingly risky school environment.
This program is perfect for a corporate lunch and learn or family wellness program. It is a must for parents who want to sleep at night knowing that they have empowered their children with the skills to make healthy choices. As one parent commented, “I walked out more informed, more shocked, and more empowered to try and guide our kids safely through life.”
