Detailed Biography of Ed Jovanovski
|
|
Jovanovski, whose parents immigrated to Canada from Yugoslavia, was drafted first overall by the Florida Panthers in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft and appeared in the Stanley Cup playoff finals with the Panthers in 1996.
Known for his smooth skating, offensive flair and heavy body checks, Jovanovski was traded on January 17, 1999 to the Vancouver Canucks with Dave Gagner, Mike Brown, Kevin Weekes and Florida's first round draft choice in the 2000 draft in exchange for Pavel Bure, Bret Hedican, Brad Ference and Vancouver's 3rd round choice in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.
Achievements include being part of the 2002 Canadian Olympic gold medal team, the 2004 World Cup Championship team and the 2005 World Hockey Championships silver medal team. He was selected to play for Team Canada at the 2006 Olympics but had to pull out before the tournament because of injury.
In 2005, Jovanovski was the subject of a documentary by Macedonian-Canadian Bill Yancoff entitled "The Late Bloomer: Ed Jovanovski" which explored his career, family tragedy and his attachments to his Macedonian heritage.
In July 2006, Jovanovski signed a five-year, $32.5 million contract with the Phoenix Coyotes.
