he has a secondary appointment in the Department of Medicine where she is an active member of the Gastrointestinal Oncology Service. Dr. Schrag's research is in health services and her focus is on studying the delivery of cancer care in order to identify opportunities to improve outcomes. Current projects involve the use of population-based data sources such as the SEER-Medicare national database, state discharge abstracts and Medicaid data to evaluate quality of care. In 2003, she received an award from the American Cancer Society to study the reasons that vulnerable patient populations, specifically the elderly and members of racial and ethnic minorities fail to receive cancer treatments that are considered standard in a multi-hospital cohort in New York City. She is also funded by NCI to address the diffusion of chemotherapy and the use of treatment for off-label indications. In 2004, she worked with Dr. Basch to develop an institutional system to capture patient-centered outcomes and real time symptom and toxicity data using the Internet. The system is undergoing evaluation as a strategy to evaluate toxicity for patients in cooperative group clinical trials. Collaborations continue with Department members including Dr. Zauber, Dr. Panageas, Dr. Elkin and Dr Bach on funded research projects. Dr. Schrag chairs the ASCO Health Services Committee, is a member of the National Quality Forum panel on colorectal cancer care; chairs the NCCN colorectal cancer database and is Vice Chair of the CALGB Cancer Control and Health Outcomes Committee.
