Detailed Biography of Dan Smith and Steve McDonagh
|
Dan Smith, a native of New York City, grew up in an Italian family (don’t let the last name fool you) where six-hour Sunday dinners were the norm. From an early age, he gained a deep and lasting love of food. During a ten-year stint as an actor and model in NYC, he began his culinary career with Francine Maroukian (voted one of New York’s Top 5 Caterers by Town & Country magazine). With Francine, he cooked for the likes of Avery Fisher and Princess Ala Von Augsburg.
With nary a stitch of formal training, he struck out on his own and opened a cafe in the resort town of Bethel, Maine. A life-long fan of the mystery series, The Hardy Boys, Dan decided that he’d combine his love for food and his favorite literary collection and thus, The Hearty Boys business was born.
Six years ago, while retaining the cafe in Maine, Dan moved to Chicago and brought The Hearty Boys catering business with him. In a few short years The Hearty Boys became a resounding success in Chicago. Dan and his partner, Steve McDonagh, have catered meals for Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kenneth Starr, Jesse Jackson Jr. and many other notables.
Dan and The Hearty Boys have been featured in Chicago Magazine, as well as on television news shows on ABC-TV, NBC-TV, CBS-TV, FOX-TV, CLTV, not to mention being in all major Chicago newspapers.
In 2003, Dan opened The Cafe at Hearty Boys in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood. This new enterprise also found The Hearty Boys offering popular cooking classes and private dinners in the cafe’s second floor space. In 2005, The Hearty Boys story evolved once more when they opened their new BYOB restaurant "HB" in the cafe space.
Steve came to the food business as countless others do--as an actor trying to make ends meet. A varied history in a tremendous range of venues performing a wide array of functions has earned Steve the title of "accidental expert".
Steve handles the business of The Hearty Boys catering company that he owns with his partner Dan as well as event organization and planning. He also helped to coauthor The Hearty Boys entertaining how-to book, Solving the Run of the Mill.
Steve has appeared in numerous television commercials and radio spots, and has been a fixture on the Chicago stage for many years. The Hearty Boys put all these varied talents to good use when they competed in Food Network’s first reality show, The Next Food Network Star, which they won in 2005. Steve and Dan now host Party Line with the Hearty Boys, a show that helps people entertain with ease.
