Detailed Biography of Dan Glickman
|
|
As "CEO" of the world's largest "agribusiness," Dan Glickman, Secretary of Agriculture in the Clinton administration, led the department responsible for one of the nation's largest and most successful industries. With annual U.S. food expenditures of $800 billion, food transportation, processing and distribution totaling $500 billion, farm real estate debt over $100 billion, exports over $50 billion and direct farm receipts for food products over $120 billion, Glickman's agriculture is definitely not small business.
The breadth of Glickman's knowledge of the interaction between agriculture and virtually every other segment of the U.S. economy is enormous. From biotechnology to food safety, from food stamps to forestry, from commodity prices to school lunches to service sector employment, agribusiness is everyone's business - and Glickman brings these concerns to life at the podium.
Known in political circles for his wit and ability to handle conflict, Glickman is a powerful and entertaining speaker; his insights educate and entertain at the same time. A lawyer by training, Glickman served almost six years as the nation's 26th Secretary of Agriculture, following 18 years in the House of Representatives from the 4th CD in Kansas.
Glickman was sworn in as the 26th Secretary of Agriculture on March 30, 1995 and served until the end of the Clinton administration. From 1977 to 1995 he served as congressman from Kansas' 4th district. While serving on the House Agriculture Committee, he chaired the Subcommittee on Wheat, Soybeans and Feed Grains. He also served on the Science and Technology Committee and chaired the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.
Glickman serves on the Columbia University Board of Advisors, School of Public Health, focusing on bioterrorism and the outbreak of diseases. He is also Director of the Institute of Politics at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. Glickman is a consultant to major corporations on biotechnology and organic and genetically modified foods. Concerned with feeding the hungry, Glickman remains committed to organizations like MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger and America's Second Harvest. He also serves as the chairman of the Fair Labor Association, a nonprofit organization that monitors labor practices in Third World Countries.
Glickman, a native of Wichita, began his public service as member and then president of the Wichita School Board. A partner in the law firm of Sargent, Klenda and Glickman, he also served as a trial attorney for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. He received his B.A. from the University of Michigan and a law degree from George Washington University.
Earlier in 2004, Glickman was appointed to succeed Jack Valenti as head of the Motion Picture Association of America.
