Detailed Biography of Chip Reid
|
|
He appears regularly on NBC Nightly News, the Today Show and MSNBC. He also contributes to MSNBC.com. Prior to his assignment on Capitol Hill, Chip spent much of 2001 through 2003 covering the war on terror. He was embedded with the U.S. Marines during the first phase of the war in Iraq, traveling with the 1st Marine Division from Kuwait to Baghdad. His unit (Third Battalion, Fifth Marines) was at the "tip of the spear" and frequently came under fire. Immediately after 9/11 Chip reported from Ground Zero in New York for two weeks, and another two weeks at the Pentagon. He spent much of the following two years reporting from locations around the globe, with tours of duty in Afghanistan, Israel (including Gaza and the West Bank), Uzbekistan, and Egypt. When not overseas, Chip was based in NBC's Los Angeles bureau from 2001 through 2003, covering everything from forest fires to politics throughout the western United States. During the 2000 Presidential election Chip was "embedded" with the Gore campaign -- 24/7 for six straight months. From 1996 to 2000, he was based in NBC's Washington bureau, covering everything from the Pentagon to politics to the White House. He reported extensively on the investigation and impeachment of President Clinton, often beginning his on-air day at 7am on Imus in the Morning and ending with an MSNBC Special Report at 11pm. Prior to coming to NBC, Chip was a reporter at two Washington, D.C. television stations: ABC affiliate WJLA, and Fox's WTTG. Prior to that, Chip's first job in the news business was as a field producer for ABC News in Washington from 1988-1989. Before jumping into the news business, Chip spent six years practicing law, four as Counsel to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, where he worked primarily for Senator Joe Biden of Delaware (Chip's home state). In 1987 Chip was General Counsel to Senator Biden's presidential campaign. He also spent two years practicing law at Kirkpatrick & Lockhart in D.C., specializing in litigation and lobbying. Chip received his law degree from Columbia Law School ('82), a Master's of Public Affairs from Princeton ('82), and a B.A. from Vassar College ('77), where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa.
